Social Media and Digital Content Specialist
Johns Hopkins University Student Affairs is seeking a creative and dynamic Social Media and Digital Content Specialist to join our divisional Communications team. This role will utilize our social, website, and other digital channels to support the student experience at Johns Hopkins—particularly the undergraduate experience on the Homewood campus—and help drive student engagement, foster a sense of community and belonging, and contribute to student development and success.
The social media and digital content specialist will primarily provide day-to-day management of the division’s social media presence, support the maintenance of website content, and serve as a content manager for the campus-wide digital signage network. Additionally, this role will support the creation and implementation of a divisional social media strategy, produce campaigns and content for use across digital channels, ensure the division’s digital presence aligns with university and divisional priorities, co-manage a student content team, and regularly produce reports to measure the impact of communications efforts.
This a new position within the Communications team and offers an opportunity to help students make the most of their experience at Johns Hopkins, contribute to a sense of community across the university, and do so in a way that’s engaging and creative. It’s an exciting time to join Student Affairs and our growing team as we near the opening of the new Hopkins Student Center and the launch of a new divisional website, among other significant initiatives. The ideal candidate for this role will be creative and collaborative, well-versed in digital platforms and emerging trends, with skills in message and content development, a solid sense for design, strong attention to detail, and demonstrated experience producing high-quality, engaging, and effective content across digital channels.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Social Media Management (50%)
- Support the development and implementation of a Student Affairs social media strategy aligned with the division’s strategic goals and initiatives.
- Create engaging and informative campaigns, posts, graphics, videos, and other content for digital platforms that help drive student engagement and highlight resources and programming to support student belonging, development, and success.
- Monitor divisional social media channels, respond to inquiries, and manage online conversations to maintain a positive, supportive, and engaged online community.
- Jointly manage a student content team comprising two to four undergraduate and graduate students who assist in sourcing and creating content relevant and authentic to the student experience.
- Collaborate with other Student Affairs departments and campus partners to amplify resources, programming, student stories, and campus life and traditions.
- Utilize analytics tools to measure the success of efforts and adjust strategies as needed. Provide regular reports and analysis to inform decision-making.
- Work closely with colleagues, other divisional departments and programs, and campus partners to ensure alignment with divisional and broader university initiatives.
- Serve as a resource for Student Affairs colleagues, advising on best practices and ensuring compliance with university policies and guidelines.
Web Content Management (30%)
- Assist in making edits to existing website content and building new web pages and content as needed.
- Routinely address broken links, misspellings, and other issues to ensure adherence to web standards and optimize site usability.
- Conduct periodic content reviews to ensure the site remains accurate, up-to-date, and relevant.
Digital Signage Network (20%)
- Participate in reviewing and approving content submissions for the digital signage network, with a focus on ensuring compliance with established brand and content guidelines.
- Manage network-wide playlists, reviewing content for timeliness and relevance to student audiences and uploading newly approved content from partners across the university.
- Assist in developing digital signage ads for divisional initiatives and campaigns.
- Adapt content from other channels (e.g., social media, email) for the digital signage network.
Other Duties
- Help to ensure consistent branding and messaging across all digital channels.
- Identify and leverage trends, emerging platforms, and best practices to optimize the division’s digital strategy.
- Provide support to all efforts of the Communications team and other duties as assigned.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Skilled in graphic design, photography, and videography, with a demonstrated understanding of how content is best leveraged across digital channels.
- Proven experience in social media management and content creation, preferably in a higher education setting.
- Strong understanding of social media platforms, trends, and analytics.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Solid understanding of design principles, layout, and brand identity.
- Proficient in graphic design tools and multimedia content creation.
- Experience using a website content management system (e.g., WordPress).
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to think creatively, strategically, and analytically.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, cultural responsiveness, and the ability to work collaboratively with multiple groups, including students, staff, and administrators.
- Self-motivated with excellent problem-solving and time management skills.
- Ability to work effectively under deadlines and simultaneously juggle several assignments.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Marketing, or a related field.
- Two years of related experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working within established brand standards is a plus. Proficient with Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud (including InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop), and related tools.
- Familiar with basic best practices for accessibility compliance across social media platforms and website content.
