Software Engineer

We are seeking a Software Engineer. The Software Engineer is a member of the Office of Information Technology (OIT) team, housed in the Office of the Vice Dean for Education (OVDE) of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. OIT provides technology support to the offices within the OVDE, develops short- and long-term strategic plans for technology, evaluates IT vendors, systems, services, and products. Manages multiple technical projects, and leads the planning, development, and maintenance of IT applications, systems, and services. The Software Engineer works closely with the OIT Manager of Software and Data Systems, the OIT Software Development team and functional users from the various departments within the OVDE.


The Software Engineer is responsible for the creation, implementation, maintenance, performance, production support and documentation of various departmental and enterprise-wide application systems. This includes but is not limited to the installation, modification, and testing of new and/or upgraded applications (packages or home grown), operating systems, file structures, hardware, communication devices, and productivity tools. The Software Engineer applies analysis techniques and procedures to gather and then translate business requirements into functional/technical specifications and designs. Using the functional specifications and designs, the Software Engineer is responsible for producing all or part of the deliverables, maintaining databases and application system code, as well as the deployment and configuration of the said application systems on the OIT servers. The Software Engineer reports to the OIT Manager, Software and Data Systems.



Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Analysis and Requirements Gathering

  • Define highly complex business/clinical/education problems by meeting with partners to observe and understand current processes and the issues related to those processes. Provide written documentation of findings to share with partners and other IT colleagues.
  • Gather highly complex system requirements by meeting with partners and researching existing technology to understand the business requirements and possible solutions for new applications.


Design & Development

  • Write functional/technical specifications based on complex system requirements, creating functional and technical descriptions for use in developing technical solutions.
  • Develop/change data input, files/database structures, data transformation, algorithms, and data output by using appropriate computer language/tools to provide technical solutions for highly complex application development tasks.
  • Document code and associated processes by adhering to development methodologies, adding code comments and appropriate documentation to various knowledge-based system(s) to simplify code maintenance and to improve support.
  • Provide guidance in application design and development to more junior staff.
  • Provide recommendations for strategic planning in designing and developing comprehensive innovative integrated solutions.


Testing & Documentation

    • Create and document highly complex test scenarios using the appropriate testing tools to validate and verify application functionality.
    • Test all changes by using the appropriate highly complex test scenarios to ensure all delivered solutions work as expected and errors are handling in a meaningful way.
    • Author and maintain documentation by writing audience-appropriate materials to serve as technical and/or end-user references.
    • Mentor junior staff in testing tools and technologies.
    • Participate in code reviews.


    Implementation & Maintenance

    • Implement changes by adhering to the change management policies and procedures for any given project to communicate to all parties the nature, significance, and risk factors of the solution.
    • Monitor changes and resolve highly complex problems requiring the highest level of technical expertise by responding as they occur, by reviewing all processing and output of the newly implemented solution, and by proactively ensuring the solution works successfully in order to satisfy the customer requirements and to provide a smooth transition to the new solution.
    • Provide support by investigating and resolving highly complex issues to ensure prompt, effective service

                        Physical Requirements

                        • Must be able to communicate effectively in person.
                        • Must be able to communicate via telephone and videoconferencing (such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams.)
                        • Must be able to carry out support of programs that require extensive work at a computer.
                        • Must be able to manipulate Excel or similar spreadsheet software programs to analyze data and prepare reports.
                        • Must be able to support office operations and events, which may require occasionally lifting and carrying objects weighing 10lbs. or less, and pushing and pulling objects weighing 30lbs. or less.


                        Minimum Qualifications

                        • Bachelor's Degree.
                        • Five years related experience.
                        • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
                        • Web Applications programming expertise using Visual Studio .NET utilizing Webforms, MVC, Design Patterns, Entity Framework, LINQ.
                        • Extensive experience in one or more languages among C#, AJAX, HTML/JavaScript/ JQuery, CSS.
                        • Experience in Object Oriented Programming.
                        • Extensive experience with SQL development, writing complex queries to create stored procedures, functions, triggers
                        • Experience with Microsoft SSRS.
                        • Knowledge and experience with Web Services protocols such as REST, SOAP, and API design.



                        Preferred Qualifications
                        • Experience/familiarity with Microsoft PowerBI and/or Tableau.
                        • Experience with SSIS.
                        • Knowledge and experience configuring web-based applications in IIS.
                        • Knowledge and experience with database administration.
                        • Experience with Salesforce and Microsoft Azure.
                        • Knowledge of enterprise authentication and directory services including Microsoft Active Directory and LDAP.
                        • Proven ability to excel in a high stress environment and ability to multi-task.
                        • Experience with software development methodologies such as Scrum/ Agile.
                        • Ability to use version control software such as SVN/ GIT.
                        • Knowledge of Web, database, and virtualization architecture.

                        Starting Salary Range: $71,230-$97,880 Annually (Commensurate with experience)
