General summary/purpose:


The Center of mHealth and Innovation is looking for a skilled and motivated software engineer to help manage and develop a Business Enterprise system for the Cutaneous Nerve Laboratory (CNL). The software engineer will be responsible for administrating, planning, developing, testing, maintaining, supporting, documenting and addressing security concerns of database systems in the CNL. This includes administration, data modeling, planning, performance tuning, optimization, developing recommendations, and complying with CAP, FDA, CLIA and JCAHO regulations in the development of existing and emerging database systems as well as detailed reporting and tracking of documentation associated with development, maintenance and security.


The CNL Business Enterprise System is a custom, in-house built application used by faculty, clinical and laboratory staff of the CNL. The system records data from clinical and research subjects with corresponding reports, final notes, slides, and quantitative analysis results. Its capabilities extend to tracking multiple types of stain analysis that are applied to pathologically-obtained specimens along with the discrete and calculated values used for analyzing research, clinical, in-house and outside cases. Process controls for users are embedded into the system.


The database application runs on a Windows Server 2016 platform. Database management is provided by MS SQL 2016 and the web application is built on a platform of with IIS7 functioning as a web server.


We are looking for a software engineer who is:

  • dynamic and motivated and capable of working in a collaborative setting.
  • has knowledge of and demonstrable experience with Microsoft SQL Server (including T-SQL, views, stored procedures, user defined functions, etc.), Microsoft .NET (ASP.NET, C#, ASP.NET MVC, AJAX, XML/XSL, HTML/Javascript/CSS,  VisualStudio).
  • detailed oriented with good written and spoken English skills to develop extensive documentation.



Business Analysis and Requirement Gathering:

  • Observe complex medical workflows and identify potential avenues for development.
  • Meet clients, assimilate the scope of development, and identify their primary needs.
  • Generate detailed documentation that captures the scope of the project, establishes a timeline, and determines an execution plan.
  • Brainstorm in a collaborative manner and introduce ideas/tools/technology that will aid in the development and growth of the Center.


Design & Deployment

  • Conceive data models that can be harnessed to analyze data reserves.
  • Develop RESTful web applications that interact with secure APIs and interact with the database engine.
  • Remodel existing databases and set up procedures for data mobility and transfer.


Implementation, Maintenance, and System Setup

  • Set up a version control system that helps in collaborating with large groups and enables rollback and code review.
  • Be responsible for end-to-end system deployment, including software installations, hardware setup and cluster communication.
  • Debug and maintain existing projects and generate incremental software for new requirements of the same.


Testing & Documentation:

  • Develop detailed test scenarios and reliability assurance tests.
  • Generate detailed validation and progress reports for individual projects.
  • Introduce a secure document sharing and communication system.


Finalist candidates will be required to complete additional testing scripts and provide supporting documentation.


Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Information Systems or related field.

5 years of related work experience with computer systems and applications required.

2+ years experience with a relational databases .

Additional education may substitute for some experience, Additional experience may be substituted for some education as allowed by JHU Equivalency.


Preferred qualifications:

Master’s degree preferred.

Languages - C#, ASP.NET, HTML/CSS, AJAX, JavaScript, VisualStudio

Operating Systems -  Windows

Databases – Relational (MS SQL server), NoSQL (MongoDB), Sqlite

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
