Sr. Accountant, Funds Management

The School of Medicine's Financial Operations team is looking for a Sr. Accountant to oversee funds management across 37 departments. This key role involves leading the School of Medicine (SOM) funds management process, collaborating with Central Finance and department leaders, and ensuring compliance with university policies, external regulations and accounting standards.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Thinking Critically

  • Identifies spend opportunities and provides fund balance and fund deployment advice for leadership.
  • Suggests and implements enhancements to funds management and policies based on knowledge of the process and relevant compliance and other issues.
  • Analyzes data for budgeting, operations, auditing, accounts receivable, and reserve analysis.


Problem Solving

  • Ensures compliance to laws, regulations, and policies around funds management.
  • Identifies potential fund balance issues and offers remediation strategies to the leadership.


Coordinates

  • Monitors all fund types to ensure appropriate and accurate accounting.
  • Coordinates with Financial Operations to ensure transactions are processed appropriately and correctly. Monitors departments’ compliance with policies.
  • Advises fund deployment opportunities for unrestricted and restricted sources.


Manages

  • Manages reporting for fund deficits and surplus balances for SOM departments.
  • Manages annual automated closeout of fund balance accounts.
  • Manages deficit reduction plans for SOM departments and performs fund reconciliations to ensure deficits across funds do not exist.


Creates/Prepares/Develops

  • Prepares a monthly financial analysis of department-specific fund activities for donor restricted and unrestricted funds to ensure proper segregation and tracking of designated purposes as well as compliance with donor restrictions.
  • Establish quarterly monitoring process of deficits and surplus balances across the School of Medicine.
  • Develops leadership reporting to communicate current fund balance status across Central School and departments.
  • Assists with monthly/quarterly/annual financial statement preparation and compliance with GAAP and accounting standards.


Collaborates/Communicates

  • Establish partnership with Manager of Business Ops; FP&A colleagues; Faculty Practice colleagues; Research colleagues; Department Directors, Administrators, and Staff; University Controller; JHHS/JHM colleagues.
  • Communicates with departments and central offices and ensures compliance with SOM and JHU policies as well as laws and regulations around funds management.
  • Utilizes communication, organizational, and analytic skills required to achieve goals in a complex organization.


Applies

  • Applies understanding of JHU and SOM policy as well as GASB regulations around fund management.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the Johns Hopkins mission.


Physical Requirements

  • Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.
  • Occasionally lifting, carrying objects weighing 10 lbs. or less.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, Finance or related field.
  • Three years of progressively responsible related financial and business operations experience, preferably in a large and complex organization.
  • Strong Excel skills.
  • If bachelor's degree is in unrelated field, four years of progressively responsible experience is required.
  • Additional education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Five or more years of experience in financial management and/or academic business operations.
  • Working knowledge of SAP.
  • Expert level proficiency with overall MS Office Suite.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination.
