Sr. Accountant

We are seeking a Senior Accountant  who will report to the CTY Assistant Director of Finance, and assists in maintaining the integrity of accounting information in SAP and reported internally and externally. This position processes non-routine accounting transactions as well as prepares, maintains, reviews, and analyzes various financial statement, records, and reports. This individual will also reconcile accounting activity and resolve complex discrepancies and will serve as a project lead for accounting projects.


This position requires a strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles to help ensure the accuracy and completeness of data transmitted to SAP via journal entries, uploads and automated interfaces. This role is an important element of the CTY internal control environment.


NOTE: This position is physically located at our Mt. Washington Campus (Baltimore, MD) but eligible for a hybrid work schedule- Optional remote work up to two days per week.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Record, classify, and summarize moderately complex financial transactions and events in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Apply working knowledge of applicable laws and regulations; verify documents for completeness and compliance with government and private agencies.
  • Initiate and process journal entries. May reconcile sub-ledgers to general ledger accounts.
  • Research and resolve moderately complex accounting issues and discrepancies pertaining to financial reporting transactions, ensuring compliance with University procedures and policies.
  • Use templates, prepare and maintain financial reports for forecasting, trending, and results analysis.
  • Analyze moderately complex financial statements and reports. Extract relevant information for senior staff.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of department monitoring and compliance reports. Perform variance analysis and prepare schedules for annual audited financial statements.
  • May assist in preparing federal, state, and other regulatory reports, ensuring compliance with established guidelines; keep informed of governmental regulations and procedures affecting the institution’s finance and accounting procedures.
  • Assist with monthly and fiscal year-end financial closings, ensuring accruals and deferrals are posted in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Assist with budget preparation, accounting for gifts, endowments, and financial aid.  Tracking how CTY actual results are doing as compared to budget.
  • Manage SAP roles & workflows for employees.  Assist with Concur system of expense submission, workflows & approvals to ensure transactions post in SAP and provide users support in this process.
  • Manage SAP accounts, changes to all master data, and capital project accounts.
  • Review financial processes for efficiencies, proper internal controls, and in accordance with regulations and university policies.
  • Assist in training new employees.
  • Serve as a resource to other accounting staff with respect to account reconciliations, journal entries, and preparation of financial statements and reports.
  • Use various software applications to manipulate and/or format data and/or reports.
  • Respond to ad hoc reporting requests.
  • May assist with 4.0 project new system integrations.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, or related field.
  • Three years of progressively responsible experience is required.


Special Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Solid understanding of generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Strong analytical skills, reports, ability to work independently and strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage priorities.


Technical Qualifications/Specialized Certification:

  • Proficiency in development and maintenance of Microsoft database & EXCEL applications.
  • SAP system experience a plus.
  • CPA and/or audit experience a plus.


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit in a normal seated position for extended periods of time
  • Dexterity of hands to operate a computer keyboard, mouse pad and other office machinery
  • The incumbent will be required to communicate regularly via telephone and face to face with internal and external customers and must be able to exchange accurate and timely information in these settings
  • Position also requires a degree of mobility common to working in an office environment; bending, kneeling or standing during events and presentations may be required.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
