Sr. Advisor to the Vice Provost of Student Health & Well-Being



Student Health and Well-Being (SHWB) is dedicated to fostering a holistic climate of well-being for Johns Hopkins students.  The area provides access to primary care, mental health services, and student disability services to students throughout JHU.  With approximately 100 staff members, this universitywide function also includes a health promotions offices that provides well-being outreach and education as well as sexual violence prevention, support and response. The Senior Advisor will support the VPSHWB’s work to coordinate the university’s current health and well-being resources for students and move them toward a more seamless universitywide model that removes barriers for students to access services and resources.


General Summary/Purpose:

Serves as the senior advisor to the Vice Provost for Student Health and Well-Being (VPSHWB) at Johns Hopkins University on matters relating to the critical functions and goals of the office. Supports the work of the VPSHWB, in directing and managing the short and long-term critical priorities, initiatives and activities that relate to current projects and goals that will enhance and/or transform the effectiveness and efficiency of Student Health and Well-Being. The person will work closely alongside the senior leadership team, providing representation, advice, input, project management and tracking, efficiency and operations excellence. This role requires strong organizational and collaboration skills, including planning, project management and supervisory skills, familiarity with higher education services and programs, and the ability to navigate a highly complex organization with diverse stakeholders.


This individual will serve as an information conduit to the VPSHWB, providing critical information and updates on matters of significance in a timely and expeditious manner.  This individual will participate in senior level discussions and decision-making, presenting relevant information and research findings, benchmarking, tracking and following up as appropriate on deliberations, decisions and action plans.


This individual will also work with the writer/researcher to develop, direct, and coordinate presentations, major addresses, remarks, and high-level briefings to the President, Provost and other members of the university leadership and/or outside constituencies.


The Office of the Vice Provost for University-wide Student Health and Well-Being oversees a range of health and well-being services for students across the greater University including the Homewood, East Baltimore and Washington DC campuses   The Office also liaises with other Student Services departments throughout the Johns Hopkins University and advances collaborations to support University-wide Student Health and Well-Being objectives. 


Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Student Health and Well-Being Operations

  • Support the Vice Provost in leading the operations of university-wide Student Health and Well-Being working in close consultation and collaboration with the Deans, Directors and a variety of offices across all academic divisions as well as university student affairs personnel.
  • Acts as key adviser to the Vice Provost.  Identify and brief Vice Provost on key issues requiring special knowledge and understanding of programs, initiatives, goals and objectives beyond day-to-day operational knowledge.
  • Ensures matters requiring the VPSHWB’s attention are developed, researched and evaluated thoroughly before presentation. 
  • Serve as the information conduit to the VPSHWB, providing critical information and updates on matters of significance in a timely and expeditious manner.  Reviews correspondence, communications, reports and presentations submitted to the VPSHWB; obtains additional information and/or recommends appropriate changes to facilitate future discussions.
  • Conduct and/or research activities in support of planning and decision making such as benchmarking initiatives with peer institutions, including research of best practices. 
  • Exercise independent discretion and judgment and assume full responsibilities for resolving issues and problems of material importance.
  • Manage operations of the VPSHWB office and supervise the executive assistant.  
  • Stay current on contemporary issues of the day in higher education and able to give thoughtful insights and consideration to the variety of current and strategic issues and topics within Student Health and Well-Being.
  • Convenes, manages and facilitates workgroups as assigned by the VPSHWB
  • Under the VPSHWB’s direction, develop and support a culture of continuous quality-improvement, shared efficiencies and professionalism within Student Health and Well-Being.

Project Management:

  • Independently manage critical, timely and important short-term and long-term special projects on behalf of the Vice Provost of Student Health and Well-Being. Collaborates as required with other team members, including  writing reports, developing plans, defining and communicating alternatives and making recommendations regarding appropriate courses of action based on thorough understanding of desired outcomes, expectations and timelines.
  • Assume responsibility for keeping broad Student Health and Well-Being initiatives on-track and completed on a timely basis. This includes working directly with university administration as well as Deans and Directors from the schools university-wide to obtain and track pertinent, and frequently sensitive and confidential information.
  • Tracks and assesses progress toward goals/priorities and takes appropriate action to influence outcomes.
  • Develops student and staff engagement plans for the VPSHWB.

Represent Student Health and Well-Being Organization:

  • Builds and stays in close working relationship and coordination with a wide range of offices and staff, internal or external to the University as well as the office of Student Health and Well-Being. 
  • Independently represent the Vice Provost and the needs of Student Health and Well-Being at internal and external meetings.
  • Interact with members of the university administration and leadership of the JHU Schools on matters of importance to the Vice Provost on his/her behalf or in his/her absence.
  • Attend meetings, gather information, represent the Vice Provost, make decisions as appropriate.


Department Search Committee Support:

  • Collaborate with administrative leadership of departments across the organization to prepare self-studies for Search Committees and candidates.
  • Assist the VPSHWB and collaborate with other leaders, including the finance and administration team, for onboarding of managers and directors.



  • Advise the VPSHWB on invitations, speaking engagements and professional commitments.
  • Coordinate all media requests (internal and external) within Student Health and Well-Being in collaboration with university central and divisional communications resources (in collaboration with the Chief of Staff in student affairs) when appropriate.
  • Work with autonomy and respect the importance of collaboration to build agreement with Student Health and Well-Being and university-wide leaders.
  • Leverage outstanding writing skills to draft reports, presentations, and other written materials.
  • Maintain the highest levels of confidentiality.
  • Flexible, highly skilled and independent position able to handle other appropriate matters as assigned by the Vice Provost.
  • Work in coordination with the Communications department of University Student Services and have dotted-line supervisory responsibilities of communications staff.


Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • Master’s degree required with a minimum of 7 years progressively responsible related experience in Higher Education.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working in student affairs and/or student health and well-being in a higher education institution.
  • Experience managing and developing staff.
  • Strong project management skills.

  • Ability to think and plan strategically while possessing a leadership style that can lead and influence individuals and teams outside of the organization to advance the mission of the office of Student Health and Well-Being.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage large and complex initiatives to successful completion with the ability to manage multiple and competing priorities simultaneously.
  • Excellent oral, written, problem solving and interpersonal skills. Perceptive and politically savvy with a high degrees of diplomacy, tact and discretion. 
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with a diverse workforce and foster and environment that support various viewpoints.
  •  Proven ability to handle highly confidential information in a professional manner required.
  • Outstanding management skills particularly in strategic and operational planning, facilitation, team building, change management and process improvement.
  • Must have the ability to exercise good judgment, make independent decisions, establish and maintain cooperative relationships with senior leadership, university officials and diverse teams across Student Services.
  • Strong supervisory abilities and proven experience in managing and developing high performance individuals.
  • General knowledge of Microsoft Office, presentation, database, project management, and web applications required.


Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:

  • Project Management certification ideal.


Supervisory Responsibility (indicate the number and type of persons supervised by incumbent):   

  • One Executive Assistant.
  • Dotted line to a Communications team of four direct and indirect reports.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
