Sr. Associate Director Alumni Relations

General Summary


The Senior Associate Director will partner with the Senior Director for Alumni Relations to provide strategic direction of alumni relations, create and implement programming for students and 30,000+ graduate, fellow, faculty and house staff alumni of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine with the goal of fostering and maintaining positive relations between them and the School to ensure the future overall success and continued growth of Johns Hopkins Medicine and the School of Medicine.  This position will play a critical role in oversight and execution of the Biennial. These cultivation, stewardship and informational programs should be aligned with the goals, priorities and needs of the institution, the school and the development and alumni relations division. 


This position will work collaboratively within The Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine and the School of Medicine to maximize alumni engagement and to build loyalty for both general support and financial support of the School of Medicine.



Reporting Relationships


The Senior Associate Director reports to the Senior Director of Alumni Relations. Two FJHM professional staff directly report to the Senior Associate Director for Alumni Relations, The Associate Director of Stewardship and the Senior Coordinator of Alumni Relations.  The Senior Associate Director will have indirect management over one additional staff member, the Stewardship Coordinator. 




Specific Responsibilities


Primary Responsibilities


  • Direct alumni programs that build and foster positive relationships.  Partner with the Senior Director to develop strategies, objectives, and measures of success and oversee the planning and implementation of comprehensive and diversified activities to keep alumni informed, interested, and actively engaged in the life of the School.  These activities include reunion, cultivation, stewardship, and informational programs.
  • Partner with the Assistant Director of Communications to manage alumni communication through print and electronic media to keep alumni abreast of institutional and school news and to highlight accomplishments of alumni and students.  This includes continually seeking ways to actively engage alumni with the institution and with students through current, widely-accepted electronic communication methods.
  • Recruit and manage volunteers for activities such as reunions, events, committees and student-alumni interactions.
  • Partner to support the programs of the Johns Hopkins Medical and Surgical Association (JHM&SA) for alumni, non-degree constituents and students. 
  • Increase participation of alumni with the School through volunteer service, attendance at events (local, regional, educational, reunions), recognition as award recipients and board members, and support of the School via financial contributions.
  • Manage a staff, seeking to continually grow their skills in concert with the alumni relations program goals of actively engaging an ever increasing number of constituents.
  • Maintain good relations, be responsive, communicate and work collaboratively with alumni, donors, faculty, volunteers, guests and colleagues from the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine, the Central Alumni Relations Office, other divisional alumni relations offices, as well as many other offices throughout the Johns Hopkins Institutions and outside vendors.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Medical Annual Giving to develop annual solicitation strategies for Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Alumni appeals.
  • Assist the School of Medicine, Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine, and Dean/CEO’s Office with the planning and implementation of special projects/programs/events, as requested.




The ideal candidate with be a seasoned and creative professional with strong leadership qualities, excellent analytical and interpersonal skills, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a proven track record of building programs as well as setting and achieving goals and objectives.  He or she will be an effective strategic planner who can design and implement new programs.  He or she will have an ability to work effectively in a complex multi-divisional organization environment, to build consensus with diverse constituent groups and organizational leaders.  Knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) desired.  Must be willing to travel occasionally and be available to work some evenings and weekends as needed.  This person must present him or herself with professionalism and seek to achieve the department’s objectives and goals at its highest level of efficiency. A bachelor’s degree is required (advanced degree preferred) and seven or more year’s related experience, preferably in a higher education environment.

Must be able to maneuver subway system or transport oneself to various off site locations (JH Hospital, Homewood campus, etc.); to lift and carry approx 50 lbs for short distances; to utilize a rolling cart; to read computer monitor and utilize phone system; to sit for up to six hours and stand for up to four hours.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
