Senior Associate Director of Development, Women’s and Children’s Health 


Working with the Executive Director of Development for Women’s and Children’s Health and the Dorothy Edwards Professor and Director of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, the Senior Associate Director of Development will play a lead role plan in managing private sector fundraising to support research, patient care, and educational needs for the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics. Work with the Department Director, faculty, and other care providers to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward major gifts, primarily from grateful patients, unaffiliated individuals, alumni, private foundations, and faculty. The Senior Associate Director will be responsible for reaching the department’s annual fundraising goal and for leading the department’s participation in the next Johns Hopkins-wide fundraising campaign.


While the focus of this position is on the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, there will also be a limited amount of work done with the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center and Department of Pediatrics as they all fall under the same Women’s and Children’s Health development office.


Responsibilities:

    1. Develop a comprehensive understanding of the research, teaching, and clinical programs of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics in order to represent these needs both internally and externally. Articulate the need for support, in the form of unrestricted funds and designated funds, within these departments.
    2. Partner with the Dorothy Edwards Professor and Director of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics to create and execute a strong development strategy and plans in support of the department. Advise the Director on all development matters. Build, grow, and manage a portfolio of major gift prospects based on new prospects and past donors at the $50,000+ level. Identify, qualify, and solicit new prospects; make discovery calls. Develop prospect strategies, cultivate and solicit prospects through personal visits and written communication. This includes an annual goal of at least 50 in-person donor visits and at least 100 substantive actions. Document development activity in the Johns Hopkins Relationship Management database. Consult with Executive Director of Development as appropriate, and on complex and challenging matters.
    3. Develop, in consultation with the Executive Director of Development, an annual work plan with goals for numbers of prospects and activity level to meet established fundraising targets in accordance with institutional standards. Goals are anticipated to be $2,500,000+ annually, depending on prospect pipeline. Plan and execute the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics’ participation in the next Johns Hopkins-wide fundraising campaign (with an anticipated departmental goal of approximately $23M). Be accountable to goals, fundraising and otherwise.
    4. Directly manage an Assistant Director of Development, whose responsibilities include identification and solicitation of annual giving prospects and donors; direct mail fundraising; crowdfunding; volunteer management; event planning; newsletter creating and execution; and management of the grateful patient referral process.
    5. Motivate, educate, and train faculty and care providers to successfully guide them through the development process. Build strong relationships with departmental faculty and staff, engaging and partnering to ensure fundraising success.
    6. Prepare proposals, solicitation letters, and other development materials for prospects and donors.
    7. In conjunction with the Assistant Director of Donor Relations for Women’s and Children’s Health, coordinate stewardship plans for donors at the $100,000+ level. Work directly with assigned donors and families, visiting them to steward funds. Write acknowledgement letters; design and produce stewardship reports; coordinate donor recognition signage; and plan and implement donor recognition events including lectureships, professorship dedications, ceremonies and other events.
    8. Participate in department development meetings and in meetings and trainings through the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine and the central development office of the Johns Hopkins University. Represent the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics in Development and Alumni Relations activities, on committees, and for institution-wide programming where appropriate.
    9. Assist in the planning, implementation, and staffing of events, such as professorship dedications, portrait unveilings, endowed lectureships, alumni receptions, ceremonies, the annual Radiothon and KIDS CAN’T WAIT Miracle Movement, and other events.
    10. Develop a comprehensive understanding of all procedures of the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine.


Skills:


The Senior Associate Director must possess effective relationship building and communications skills, be highly organized, have strong oral, written, editorial and analytical skills, and be capable of developing solid relationships with faculty, patients, donors, and colleagues. The Senior Associate Director must have development experience including personal solicitation of prospects at the $50,000+ level, with a focus on six and seven figure prospects, and be willing to participate in all aspects of the program’s fundraising efforts including personal visits, direct mail, and events. The Senior Associate Director must be a self-starter, able to manage several projects simultaneously, have a high level of accountability, and understand the need to re-evaluate priorities on a regular basis to flourish in a fast-paced environment. The Senior Associate Director must be a cooperative and collegial individual who enjoys working with diverse populations.



Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Five years professional related experience 


Preferred Qualifications
  • Relatable experience including personal solicitations of major gifts with a documented record of productivity, preferably in health care or higher education
  • Planned giving experience preferred.
  • Ability to work in an environment that puts a strong emphasis on metrics and success.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; demonstrated ability to take initiative and be a self-starter; manage projects; determine priorities; and maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Comfortable working in a complex, multi-department organizational, dynamic,
  • fast-paced environment.
  • Experience working with broadly diverse groups of constituents such as, donors, alumni, patients, faculty, department chairs, hospital and university administration, fundraising colleagues and/or institutional leadership preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills, and demonstrated effective writing, and editorial skills.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills required and ability to manage more than one project simultaneously.
  • Strong computer literacy skills required and the ability to learn new software.
  • Ability and willingness to travel; Flexibility with scheduling as this position may require occasional evening or weekend hours.
