POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

Title: Senior Associate Director of Development, Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, The Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine

 

Reports to:   Director of Development, Surgery Program

          Milton T. Edgerton, M.D., Professor and Director of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

 

Summary:     

 

Work with the Milton T. Edgerton, M.D., Professor and Director of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and members of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery faculty in the management of private sector fund raising to support research, patient care and educational needs for the department. Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward annual, major, and principal gifts, primarily from grateful patients, unaffiliated individuals, alumni, and faculty. This position will work with the Director of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery faculty to identify and qualify new prospects, solicit and steward major gifts, make discovery visits, and upgrade lower level donors. This position will assist the Director of Development for Surgery Programs in managing the mandatory stewardship of donors.

 

All fundraising activity will be coordinated within the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine, and the central development office of the Johns Hopkins University.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

 

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the research, teaching, and clinical programs of the areas of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in order to represent these needs both internally and externally. Articulate the need for support of unrestricted funds and priority needs within these departments.

 

  • Partner with the Director of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery to create a development plan to identify, qualify, and solicit new and existing major gift prospects, make discovery calls, and build a prospect pool based on new prospects and past donors at the $25,000+ level.

 

  • Initiate gift strategies, cultivate and solicit prospects through personal visits and written communication. This includes an annual goal of at least 85 face-to-face donor visits.
  • Hold recurring meetings to encourage faculty participation in development activities; secure faculty referrals for potential patient/prospects; coordinate faculty participation in prospect solicitations and stewardship.  Keep development team current on faculty research initiatives and funding priorities.

 

  • Prepare case statements, major proposals, outreach and solicitation letters, and other development materials for prospects and donors.

 

  • Coordinate stewardship plans for donors at the $100,000+ level. Research specific current-use and endowed funds, develop annual reports for donors, and coordinate annual donor visits.

 

  • Manage direct mail fundraising to grateful patients, alumni, and faculty. This includes drafting correspondence and coordinating details in-house and externally.

 

  • Coordinate and assist with the planning and coordination of development related activities for Surgery Programs including professorship dedications, lectureships, and other ceremonies and events, as needed.

 

  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Skills:

 

The Senior Associate Director must possess effective relationship building and communications skills, be highly organized, have strong oral, written, editorial, and analytical skills, and be capable of developing solid relationships with faculty, patients, donors, and colleagues. The Senior Associate Director must have development experience including personal solicitation of prospects at the $50K+ level with a focus on six and seven figure prospects and be willing to participate in all aspects of the program’s fundraising efforts that include personal visits, direct mail, and events. The Senior Associate Director must be a self-starter, able to manage several projects simultaneously, and understand the need to re-evaluate priorities on a regular basis to flourish in a fast-paced environment. The Senior Associate Director must be a cooperative, collegial individual who enjoys working with diverse populations. 

 

 

Position Requirements:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Five or more years of professional development experience or relatable experience including personal solicitations, with a documented record of productivity, preferably in health care or higher education.
  • Comfort working in an environment that puts a strong emphasis on metrics and success and ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently; ability to work as part of a team; manage projects; determine priorities; and maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Comfortable working in a complex, multi-divisional organizational environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills, and demonstrated effective writing, and editorial skills.
  • Strong organizational skills required and ability to manage more than one project simultaneously.
  • Strong computer literacy skills required and the ability to learn new software.
  • Ability and willingness to travel; be flexible with scheduling as this position may require occasional evening or weekend hours.

 

 

Physical Requirements

 

  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds, and at times, carry necessary equipment (i.e. lap top) and/or supplies (events materials, signage, etc.)
  • Must be able to sit for eight hours, as needed.
  • Must be able to stand for various lengths of time, as needed.
  • Must be able to walk stairs, as needed.
  • Must possess valid driver’s license and be able to travel.
