Sr. Associate Director of Development, The Brady Urological Institute


Summary of Responsibilities:


The Senior Associate Director of Development will play a lead role in helping to shape the priorities and operations of the Brady Urological Institute Development Office, and will be responsible for the planning, implementation and management of major and principal fundraising efforts for the benefit of the Brady from friends, grateful patients, and foundations. Serving as a thought partner for the Director of Development and working with senior development staff members across Johns Hopkins, as well as faculty, care providers, administrators, and volunteer leaders, the Senior Associate Director will identify, strategize, cultivate, solicit and steward a portfolio of prospects. The Senior Associate Director will partner with members of the Kimmel Cancer Center Development Office in supporting programming and fundraising for the Johns Hopkins Greenberg Bladder Cancer Institute. This position will supervise the Brady’s Assistant Director of Development, providing oversight and strategy for annual fund, stewardship and constituent engagement activities. Travel is associated with this role.




  1. Develop a comprehensive understanding of the research, teaching and clinical programs and priorities, and development procedures of Johns Hopkins University, the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, and the Brady Urological Institute, in order to represent these needs both internally and externally.


  1. Manage a portfolio of approximately 100-115 prospects with the goal to personally solicit, or arrange for volunteer or institutional solicitation, for major and principal gifts to fund the priority needs of the Brady and its mission.  The focus will be on gifts in the range of $100,000 to $3+ million.


  1. Serve as primary development liaison to a group of 7-10 urology faculty members. Hold recurring meetings to encourage faculty participation in development activities; identify and evaluate giving potential of prospects; coordinate faculty participation in prospect solicitations and stewardship. Keep development team current on faculty research initiatives and funding priorities.


  1. Complete 90 or more meaningful prospect and donor substantive interactions per year. Performance targets also include benchmarks for funds raised, proposals developed and submitted, visits, and portfolio penetration, among others.


  1. Prepare and direct preparation of case statements, major proposals, outreach and solicitation letters, and other cultivation and informational material for prospects and donors.


  1. Develop a comprehensive understanding of the Johns Hopkins Greenberg Bladder Cancer Institute and partner closely with Brady faculty and Development Office and Kimmel Cancer Center Development Office to support programming and fundraising for the Institute.


  1. Supervise an Assistant Director of Development, providing oversight and strategy for annual fund, stewardship and constituent engagement activities, to ensure annual goals are met.


  1. Represent The Brady in internal and external committees and advisory groups.


  1. Assist with the planning and coordination of major development events including Advisory Board meetings, virtual seminars, professorship dedications and donor recognition events, as needed.


  1. Supervise development staff during director’s vacations and absences.


  1. Additional responsibilities as assigned.



Background Experience and Qualifications:  


  • Bachelor’s degree required. 
  • Five or more years of professional development experience, with a track record of securing five and six figure gifts, preferably in an academic/medical setting. Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Some planned giving experience preferred.
  • Must possess effective communication skills, be highly organized, have strong written and analytical skills, and be capable of developing solid relationships with faculty, colleagues and grateful patients.
  • Supervisory or significant project management experience preferred.
  • High levels of diplomacy and tact required.
  • Must be able to manage several projects simultaneously, understand the need to re-evaluate priorities on a regular basis, and flourish in a fast-paced atmosphere.
  • A team mentality with a willingness to collaborate is necessary.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
