Sr. Associate Director of Foundation Relations

Senior Associate Director of Foundation Relations

The Senior Associate Director of Foundation Relations will help secure and steward funding from private foundations for the benefit of the Johns Hopkins Institutions.  S/he will manage a portfolio of foundations relevant to the following divisions: the Whiting School of Engineering, the Physical and Life Sciences departments of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Advanced International Studies, the Carey Business School, and Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures.  Other divisions, institutes, and emerging priority initiatives may be assigned as needed.  The Senior Associate Director will report to the Senior Director of Foundation Relations for Johns Hopkins University & Medicine.

 

The Senior Associate Director will manage a portfolio of foundations relevant to these assignments as “primary relationship manager,” keeping up-to-date about their missions and priorities, and ensuring that any opportunities for funding consideration are seized.  S/he will develop and execute a highly strategic approach to securing major foundation support, especially for faculty engaged in current and emerging research with a nationally and internationally competitive edge, and for institutional priority programs related to the University and its community.

 

Specific duties & responsibilities:

  • Work in partnership with the Senior Director of Foundation Relations, institutional and Divisional leadership, Development colleagues, and faculty members to maximize independent foundation support for the University
  • Lead the development and implementation of a high-level strategic and creative approach that responds to relevant Divisional priorities and also identifies and pursues independent foundation resources that can advance other areas of competitive strength
  • With a focus on grants of at least six figures, work closely with academic leaders, faculty, and Development colleagues to identify prospects, cultivate their interest, build productive relationships, and develop proposal content, and submit high-quality solicitations – including planning and staffing visits and site visits
  • In partnership with divisional foundation relations colleagues, meet with faculty to proactively develop and prepare concept papers, letters of inquiry, proposals, grant reports (when appropriate), and training/coaching and consultation
  • In collaboration with other central Foundation Relations staff, provide advice and general guidance to Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) colleagues seeking assistance for foundation support of funding needs that fall below these thresholds
  • Work with central FR colleagues to ensure that Foundation Relations provides the highest-quality support for selected limited-submission competitions
  • Manage strategic stewardship of major funders, including presidential annual reports, visits, and site visits, as appropriate
  • Work with the Office of the Vice Provost for Research and Johns Hopkins University Research Administration (JHURA) in support of faculty proposals
  • In consultation with the Senior Director, help develop and deliver presentations for faculty and Development colleagues to increase knowledge about independent foundation funding, build capabilities for foundation grant-seeking among faculty, and foster new sources of support

 

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 5 years of related experience, with minimum two years foundation fundraising experience.

 

Preferred experience:

  • Record of success in securing high six-figure and seven-figure gifts or grants.
  • Development experience in a higher education or academic medical setting.
  • An advanced degree.
  • Writing, foundation, and academic experience.

 

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Exceptional writing skills and speaking skills including conveying research projects to an informed lay audience—writing samples will be required of finalists for this position
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills

Location:

  • The Johns Hopkins’ Office of Foundation Relations is based in Baltimore, Maryland although this position will consider hybrid and remote-work applicants.

 

Technical qualifications or specialized certifications:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office software

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
