Sr. Benefits Analyst

General Description:

Reports to the Director of the Office of Benefits Services which includes Compliance, Financial Management/Reporting, Plan Administration, Project Management, Communications and Vendor Management. 


Main responsibilities are specific to the administration of the defined contribution and deferred compensation retirement plans of the University

  • Manage day-to-day retirement plan administration of both qualified (403(b)) and deferred compensation plans (457(b) and 457(f), meet necessary deadlines and oversee record retention for the plans. 
  • Responsible for evaluation, accumulation and analysis of multiple complex retirement benefit plans and reconciliation and maintenance of data. 
  • Monitor retirement plan weekly and bi-weekly eligibility and payroll files to ensure timely receipt at JHU and the various retirement plan vendors.
  • Track and monitor 457(b) & 457(f) non-qualified plan participation, eligibility, terminations and calculate payments.
  • Work closely with retirement plan vendors to ensure satisfactory employee experience.
  • Review and monitor compliance requirements associated with ERISA and IRS regulations.
  • Correspond with employees via phone, email and mail to inform of and collect 457(b) & 457(f) elections.
  • Oversight of and signature authority for vendor funding requirements, remittances and premium payments for benefit plans. 
  • Responsible for understanding plan design and administrative practices to resolve complex issues regarding eligibility, plan interpretation and participant account management
  • Anticipate, solve and prevent problems proactively. 
  • Recommend and implement system and workflow changes. 
  • Routinely lead the work of others with regard to projects and delivery of benefits programs. 
  • Create, update and maintain employee communications to ensure effective communication with employees and compliance with applicable federal and state laws.  Design, maintain and extract benefits reports from the university’s SAP system. 
  • Perform various other position related duties and responsibilities as requested or assigned. 

Qualifications, Education, Experience and Skills:

  • Requires Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree preferred) and four years of progressively responsible experience in retirement benefits administration or appropriate combination of education and experience.
  • Strong benefits operations and customer service background, preferably in a university setting. 
  • Strong knowledge of retirement benefit plans, policies, practices and laws. 
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, and ability to work effectively as part of a team. 
  • Excellent written and verbal skills and mathematical abilities; ability to provide clear information on benefits policies and procedures to faculty, staff, retirees and university contacts. 
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks, work independently and exercise judgment. 
  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines and disseminate information accurately. 
  • Ability to function under pressure and maintain a high level of decorum as well as to endure a high work volume and client demands. 
  • Previous experience in high volume office atmosphere preferred. 
  • Ability to handle confidential information in an appropriate manner.
  • Experience working with ERP system (SAP preferred), document management systems, software applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, relational databases.

Starting Salary Range ($s): $57,544 - $79,047

Employee group (Full time/Part-time/Limited/Casual): Full-time

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
