Sr. Business Analyst

The Digital Research and Curation Center seeks a Business Solution Analyst  who serves as the key interface between the Data Management Directorate and the Collections and Services units of the Sheridan Libraries and other divisions throughout the University. The position works with stakeholders (including faculty) to elicit, clarify, analyze, and review business, functional and technical requirements, especially toward ensuring requirements align with overall strategic plans and priorities. The Business Solution Analyst also develops use cases, documentation (e.g., wire frames, architectural diagrams, process flows), acceptance criteria and tests, and assists with triage of production-related issues. This individual advises the Associate Dean for Research Data Management regarding business process improvements, data and business analytics, and resource gaps, especially related to new services or functions.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop a thorough understanding of business operations and requirements through engagement with stakeholders (including faculty).
  • Identify and document business, functional and technical requirements for new business processes or solutions.
  • Independently gather information from subject matter experts to develop, organize, and write technical specifications and process documentation.
  • Develop and maintain detailed records of appropriate reference materials.
  • Communicate trade-offs and dependencies across stakeholder and IT staff (particularly software developers and systems engineers), especially in consultation with Associate Dean.
  • Facilitate relevant discussions and make recommendations regarding choices or trade-offs based on analysis of business processes, tools, and analytics.
  • Develop use cases, documentation, and coordinate or perform user acceptance testing.
  • Actively participate in the scrum process with software engineers and systems engineers.


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related work experience demonstrating increasing responsibility and complexity of tasks.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for education to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Experience with agile (scrum, Kanban) methodologies.
  • Experience with project management software and tools.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, especially related to concise, clear reporting to diverse stakeholders and constituents.
  • Demonstrated ability to support multiple projects concurrently.
  • Demonstrated facilitation skills.
  • Data or business analytics experience.
  • Experience with diverse, cross functional teams.
  • Proven experience with building consensus across multiple stakeholders (including faculty).


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with open source software development.
  • Experience with Lean or Six Sigma processes.
  • Familiarity with academic or research library software.


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to work independently within a team environment, especially based on understanding of business needs and organizational relationships.
  • Analytical and proven problem-solving skills.


Technical Qualifications/Specialized Certifications:

  • Project management software (e.g., MS Office, Smartsheet, Airtable).
  • Product Owner certification is a plus (preferred qualification).


JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
