The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health celebrated its Centennial year in 2016.  It is the oldest and largest, public health school in the world. In honor of the Centennial anniversary, in September 2016, Bloomberg Philanthropies announced a transformational $300 million gift to improve health in the United States.  The Bloomberg American Health Initiative has five focus areas: addiction and overdose; environmental challenges; obesity and the food system; risks to adolescent health; and violence. The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is seeking a Director of Communications for the Bloomberg American Health Initiative. 

 

General Summary/Purpose

The Bloomberg American Health Initiative Communications Director will be for overseeing and implementing the communications strategy that promotes the work of the Bloomberg American Health Initiative through earned media, website content and other digital platforms. This includes but is not limited to media relations and press releases, social media, web content, e-newsletters and the American Health Podcast. The Director of Communications will shape and advance the Initiative’s communications strategy, message and brand across local, state, national and global communications. The Communications Director will work closely with Bloomberg Philanthropies and external media firms in developing the Initiative’s message and disseminating it.  The Communications Director will also work closely with faculty, staff, students, the School’s central communications and marketing team and other media departments to ensure a comprehensive and coherent strategy through which the Initiative’s message is disseminated. 

The Communications Director will be responsible for assisting in the development of a marketing strategy for the Bloomberg Fellows program and will develop, oversee and conduct public presentations designed to promote the Bloomberg American Health Initiative. 

 

The Communications Director will be responsible for ensuring accurate representation of the Initiative on the internet, including social media platforms. The incumbent will be fiscally responsible for budget development, implementation and fiscal approval of communications and media-related projects. 

 

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

 

The Communications Director responsibilities will also include:

  • Providing vision, leadership and counsel for the Initiative’s communications and marketing, including overseeing an integrated communications plan.

     

  • Creating and overseeing the creation of original content across a variety of platforms.

 

  • Formulating and managing a comprehensive media relations strategy and program at the local, state and national levels encompassing print, television and social media outlets.

     

  • Developing and managing agreements and contracts with external communications firms

     

  • Providing fiscal oversight of internal and external stakeholder communications, marketing, and media plans

 

  • Engaging with key media outlets, both proactively and reactively.

     

  • Managing communications for events, including an annual summit.

     

  • Identifying strategic communication opportunities with internal and external partners.

     

    Developing benchmark criteria to track and evaluate the effectiveness of the communications strategies on a regular basis.

     

     

Minimum Qualifications

 

Bachelor's degree in related field.

5 years related experience.

 

Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *

 

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in journalism, communications, marketing or related field preferred.
  • Experience in public health preferred. Journalism experience is a plus.
  • Minimum of 5 years related experience required developing and implementing complex and comprehensive communication or advocacy strategies.
  • Holistic understanding of all aspects of communications, positioning and messaging, including industry best practices in both traditional and emerging media platforms and experience with state-of-the-art communications technology.
  • Significant experience working with national media outlets and digital media channels.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience designing and executing a strategic communications plan in a complex organization with varied priorities and stakeholders.
  • Outstanding management and planning skills, including the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously in a decentralized environment.
  • Excellent and nuanced writing ability and range.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, persuasive presentation and public speaking skills.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
