Sr. Communications Specialist

The Department of Biomedical Engineering is currently recruiting for a Senior Communications Specialist  to implement a strategic marketing and communications plan created to align with the department’s reputation and recruitment goals. This position will be responsible for development, execution and optimization of content disseminated across multiple internal and external electronic and print platforms. The Senior Communications Specialist will be responsible for branding, marketing, media relations and content creation for website, social media and other publications, while adhering to brand standards and University guidelines.

 

The ideal candidate will demonstrate proficiency in the ability to pursue projects from conception to completion and be accustomed to working independently in a fast-paced environment. In addition, the Senior Communications Specialists writes, edits, and proofs content for an array of internal and external communications platforms and audiences including current and prospective students, donors, alumni and faculty.

 

The Senior Communications Specialist will be provided an annual budget as well as event specific budgets, to support media/marketing campaigns, promotional activities, external consultant work, and any required web-related infrastructural updates. The Senior Communications Specialist will be responsible for managing these budgets/finances, report on trends and returns, and support creation of budgets and recommendations for future activities.

 

They will serve as the Technical Assistant in developing media projects to promote the department associated with new initiatives, programs, and education, outreach, and research activities. They will be first point of contact to the public and JHU associates for the department, responding to all inquiries in a timely manner and liaising with both the School of Medicine and the Whiting School of Engineering communications offices.

 

The Senior Communications Specialist will use meaningful metrics to evaluate and measure progress towards goals and specific targets and will report on regular basis to supervisor(s).

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Promotional Materials Preparation:

  • Integrates online activities with marketing and communications plans to ensure consistency and meet goals.
  • Develops promotional videos, infographics, images, and curates photograph and video library for use on multiple platforms and in conjunction with WSE, SOM, and JHU marketing and communications offices when needed.
  • Ensures all materials adhere to University and school brand and messaging guidelines.

 

Media Outlet/Database Management:

  • Stays current with technology and media trends and suggests news and outreach efforts to school and university communications offices.
  • Executes plan to ensure increased awareness of the BME department's reputation by pitching department faculty experts and research news, as well as staying current on media trends and thought leaders and subject matter experts to maintain BME's competitive advantage.

 

Website Management/Social Media:

  • Oversees web maintenance, branding and social media efforts in alignment with overall recruitment and reputation goals.
  • Attends and reports on events and other faculty and student-driving initiatives to stay informed and report on research and educational programs.

 

Events:

  • Oversees strategy and logistics of BME departmental events, as well as recruitment and general awareness events and conferences.
  • Does so in accordance with department budget guidelines.
  • Ensures materials and outreach efforts are thorough and executed within school and university event guidelines.

 

Other Responsibilities:

  • Oversees organic and/or paid media and marketing campaigns to achieve reputation and recruitment goals.
  • Ensures all communications projects and marketing efforts comply with University Branding Guidelines and JHU Use of Name Guidelines, as well as SOM and WSE guidelines.
  • Maintains comprehensive editorial calendar that ensures coordination and timely placement of recruitment and communications efforts and events, in alignment with school and university calendars.
  • Manages hiring process and coordinates work with outside vendors.
  • Oversees staff and/or student workers in support of communications efforts.

 

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field.
  • Two years related experience.
  • Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*

 

JHU Equivalency Formula:  18 graduate degree credits (semester hours) may substitute for one year of experience.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. 

 

** Applicants who do not meet the posted requirements but are completing their final academic semester/quarter will be considered eligible for employment and may be asked to provide additional information confirming their academic completion date.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field (journalism, marketing, writing, media relations, public relations).
  • Minimum four years full-time professional relevant experience.

 

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Experience with Word Press, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, and Google Analytics; Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Knowledge of regional and national print, broadcast and electronic media outlets, and social networking, including web-based and online media/information sites.
  • Project management experience.
  • Working knowledge of communications analytics tools.
  • Working knowledge of digital marketing platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to build collaborative working relationships and identify, assess, and meet diverse client needs.
  • Ability to organize workflow, prioritize and manage multiple projects with minimal direction, meet deadlines, think critically and creatively, and exercise sound judgment.

 

Writing samples are encouraged and a writing test will be part of interview process.
