Sr. Director, Student Disability Services - East Baltimore Hub

Johns Hopkins University’s Student Health & Well-Being portfolio supports disability services, health education, primary care and mental health services for JHU students and learners across all nine schools within the University. Student Disability Services (SDS) fosters inclusive and equitable experiences for students with disabilities by coordinating academic, housing, dining and transportation accommodations in accordance with applicable laws institutional policies; promoting accessibility and universal design; and raising awareness of disability as an area of diversity and cultural identity.

The E. Baltimore Student Disability Services Hub coordinates accommodations and services for students with disabilities in the School of Medicine (SOM), the School of Medicine Graduate Programs (SOM Grad), the School of Nursing (SON), and the Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH). We are seeking a Senior Director of Student Disability Services (SDS)  who will report to the Executive Director of Student Disabilities (SDS), directs the E. Baltimore Hub with the overall goal of ensuring students with disabilities have consistently inclusive and accessible experiences at Hopkins.


The Senior Director will support the diverse academic, personal/developmental, and interpersonal needs of our growing population of students with disabilities on the medical campus. Overall, we seek committed, adaptable staff who enjoy working in a university climate that promotes cultural diversity, multicultural understanding, and social justice. Ability to travel and work across campus locations is required as well as experience working in a diverse and multicultural work environment.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • The Senior Director will provide oversight, strategic direction and subject matter expertise for the Student Disability Services E. Baltimore Hub including the School of Nursing, School of Medicine and the Bloomberg School of Public Health
  • Guide direct service provision for the SDS E. Baltimore Hub including accommodation delivery, accessibility and inclusivity; coordinate with school liaisons as appropriate
  • Lead, implement, and support efforts to develop policies, programs and infrastructure for SDS E. Baltimore Hub to effectively serve students with disabilities
  • Ensure the SDS E. Baltimore Hub is following best practices and remains up-to-date about cutting edge issues and changes in the field



  • Coordinate and provide accommodations for disabled School of Nursing students (shared caseload with one other part-time professional) and School of Medicine Graduate Program students
  • Review documentation, meet with students, suggest or facilitate accommodations for students, work with campus partners including faculty, clinical & program coordinators, and address questions and concerns in a timely and effective manner
  • Provide leadership, consultation and back up coverage to all E. Baltimore schools (BSPH, SOM, SOM Grad,SON)
  • Champion the proactive implementation of coordinated support and universal design within and across all E. Baltimore schools to foster inclusive experiences for students including, but not limited to, testing accommodations, accessible course materials and communication access


Awareness & Support:

  • Build awareness, knowledge, and skills related to disability as a part of Johns Hopkins’s diversity and inclusion initiatives that involve disability, including serving as a content expert for E. Baltimore to ensure programs, resources and services are inclusive of students with disabilities
  • Coordinate with students, faculty, and staff (including SDS staff across the university) to raise awareness of issues related to ableism including Disability Awareness Month activities, educational outreach during faculty and new student orientations, and other outreach efforts
  • Organize regular campus-wide programming to raise awareness of disabilities
  • Help students develop and holistically integrate their own identity as a student with a disability
  • Teach students to advocate for themselves, both at JHU and beyond
  • Promote and support a culture of acceptance and inclusion for students with disabilities
  • Educate faculty, staff and students regarding all forms of disability
  • Work closely with student organizations that support students with disabilities, including but not limited to the Equal Access in Science and Medicine, the Coalition for Disability Access in Health Science Education and the newly formed DocsWithDisabilities Initiative Access In Medicine Working Group.


Campus Partner:

  • Work closely with the Office of Institutional Equity, General Counsel, Offices of Academic Advising, Johns Hopkins Student Assistance Program (JHSAP), Transportation, University Health Services, Student Health and Wellness, Student Employment Services, and various campus partners
  • Represent the office, portfolio, division and university on committees and serve as a content expert for the E. Baltimore Hub schools to ensure programs and services are inclusive of the needs of students with disabilities
  • In partnership with the Executive Director, Office of Institutional Equity and the ADA Compliance Officer, support the campus’ continuing efforts to learn about disability by consulting, offering workshops and other programs
  • Partner with the other disability coordinators in the 9 schools at Johns Hopkins as well as the Executive Director
  • When appropriate, partner with local community organizations to educate the campus and provide supplementary resources



  • Ensure compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the ADA Amendments Act in coordination with the ADA Compliance Officer at the Office of Institutional Equity
  • Ensure compliance with related federal and state regulations as they pertain to students and applicable disability matters
  • Ensure that technical standards and essential requirements are factored effectively into the accommodation processes, ensuring students have accessible and inclusive experiences
  • Ensure that all accommodations are ADA compliant, developed and delivered thoroughly, effectively, and efficiently and build needed connections with faculty, graduate teaching assistants, and staff supporting students both inside and outside the classroom as well as across clinical settings
  • Oversee the range of accommodation needs of students related to coursework, dining, transportation, information technology, teaching, research as well as other services


Supervision & Budget:

  • Supervise professional and administrative staff members across the E. Baltimore Hub
  • Evaluate the performance of direct reports, including setting yearly goals, professional development opportunities and high standards for professionalism and service delivery; initially this will be for 1 professional staff member but this will grow to 2 to 3 as positions centralize
  • Coordinate the decentralized accommodation budgets for the E. Baltimore Hub, including spending, tracking and reconciliation


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Master’s Degree Required. PhD preferred in one or more of the following areas: educational psychology, curriculum and teaching, counseling, psychology, special education, disability services or a related field.
  • At least five years of experience in a disability services office, preferably one that serves nursing and/or medical programs in a higher education setting, with increasing supervisory and management responsibilities.

Special Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities:

  • The position requires a leader who can work both independently and collaboratively to guide the disability service support programs; a highly organized and detail-oriented individual with knowledge of changing legal issues as they relate to students with disabilities
  • Knowledge of student development and disability inclusion
  • Knowledge of and experience with assistive and/or instructional technologies; ability to interact well with faculty, staff and students
  • Ability to identify academic problems and their effective solutions; understanding of the needs and interests of undergraduates, graduates, and faculty; excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to interact well with diverse internal and external clientele; ability to be flexible in a decentralized academic environment; strong supervision skills and budgetary experience

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
