OFFICE AND BLOOMBERG SCHOOL OVERVIEW

The Office of External Affairs encompasses three teams: 1) Communications and Marketing; 2) Development and Constituent Relations and 3) Finance and Administration.

 

The Development & Constituent Relations Team is responsible for raising philanthropic resources and building connections with alumni and unaffiliated individuals, foundations and corporations to support the School’s education, research and public health practice. The Development group includes individual-giving, institutional-relations, stewardship and communications professionals, and it collaborates significantly with the university’s centrally-based colleagues. The Constituent Relations group uses a robust communications program to promote a diverse set of events and engagement opportunities that seek to promote public-health advocacy and annual fund support.

 

The School recently completed its Centennial year and is in the final year of a University- wide fundraising campaign, Rising to the Challenge. To date, the School has exceeded its campaign goal of $700M by raising in excess of $1.2B.  Included in this total is a $300M gift from the Bloomberg Philanthropies to establish the Bloomberg American Health Initiative, the creation of 25 endowed professorships and will provide 50 full-tuition scholarships annually. Alumni giving is at all time high and the number of unaffiliated donors has grown steadily.  With a new Dean in place and a soon to launch strategic plan, the School is well positioned for continued fundraising success. GENERAL SUMMARY/ PURPOSE STATEMENT

Reporting to the Associate Dean for External Affairs, the Sr. Director of Development will provide vision and direction for the School’s individual donor strategy, including a focus on development communications, alumni and non-alumni engagement, an enhanced focused on annual giving, major gift pipeline development, along with the long term development of major and principal gift donors.  As a member of the Office of External Affairs leadership team, this position will work closely with the Sr. Director for Communications and Marketing, the Director for Finance and Administration and the Associate Dean to promote a culture of collaboration, creative innovation and rewarding outcomes.

 

The Sr. Director will supervise the newly formed Development Communications team, the principal and major gift teams and the Constituent Relations team.   The Sr. Director will manage a small (10-15) portfolio of current donors initially. Over a two to three-year period, the portfolio will likely grow to 30-40, with no more than 40 managed at one time.  This will allow the Sr. Director to focus on setting the strategy for the individual fundraising team, coaching and mentoring the staff and providing leadership for the Office of External Affairs.

 

 

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Consult with the Dean of the School and the Associate Dean for External Affairs to develop and manage the annual fundraising plan focused on individual donors, typically in the $10-15M range, with the expectation of increasing the range to $15M-$20M, for the School of Public Health, including setting goals, developing solicitation work plans, monitoring efforts, and evaluating results
  • Manage a team of 12, with direct supervision of four program leaders, including oversight and management of the School's major and principal gifts program, annual fund, alumni and constituent relations programs, development communications, the stewardship process, and the gift acknowledgement system
  • Manage an initial portfolio of 10-15 major and principal gift prospects, including key mandatory stewardship relationships, with the intention of growing the portfolio to a maximum of 40 major to principal level donors in the first 36 months
  • Serve as staff to the Dean of the School on major gift efforts and strategies for individuals
  • Manage the School’s Health Advisory Board Committees and other volunteer committees, as assigned
  • Participate in the budget planning process and oversee all development budgets with a high degree of fiscal responsibility
  • Work closely with the Director of Finance and Administration to develop policies and procedures to allow and encourage the operations and development teams to work in a highly supportive and collaborative manner
  • Work closely with the Sr. Director of Communications and Marketing to support their team goals and identify opportunities for on-going collaboration
  • Attend University-wide development meetings and participate on task forces and committees
  • Manage special projects and fundraising initiatives, as assigned

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (mandatory):

Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred. Seven to ten years of development experience, with increasing levels of responsibility required. Demonstrated success in cultivating, soliciting and closing six and seven figure gifts required, with a preference for experience with eight figure solicitations. At least five years of successful supervisory and management experience with a commitment to professional development and goal achievement of direct reports required. Demonstrated experience managing complex principal level gifts ($1M +), recruiting and managing leadership volunteers and boards and working with faculty on fundraising initiatives required. Experience in the field of higher education strongly preferred.  Experience managing alumni relations and development communications programs preferred. Must have superb written and oral communication skills. Requires proven fundraising ability, knowledge of various planned giving instruments, major gift protocols, and the ability to exercise independent judgment.
