Sr. Financial Analyst, Basic Science Depts & Centers



We are seeking a Sr. Financial Analyst, Basic Science Departments & Centers who will manage a portfolio of basic science departments and centers and use data to drive analyses that inform decisions around financial goals, objectives, and performance. This role meets regularly with departmental points of contact to ensure two-way communication for advocacy, knowledge transfer, and a shared understanding of financial activities. This role will report to the Associate Director, Basic Science Departments & Centers FP&A.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Coordinates

  • Meets regularly with Basic Science/Center departments to ensure two-way communication to create advocacy for the areas, knowledge transfer, and a shared understanding of financial activities.
  • Supports the financial business activities including developing school budgets, scenario planning, predictive analysis, financial modeling, variances, and forecasting.


Applies

  • Obtains knowledge of the Basic Science/Center departments and their financial activities through regular meetings and communications to determine how to advocate for the areas during conversations with JHM and JHU.


Creates/Prepares/Develops

  • Assists in the preparation of budgets, scenario planning, long-range planning, financial modeling, variances, forecasting, projections, financial plans and reports, and other types of complex analysis, involving the review of significant amounts of data.


Analyzes/Interprets

  • Analyzes the financial activities to assist in the preparation of departmental and school budgets, planning, modeling, and reports.
  • Provides recommendations to critical financial business decisions.
  • Extracts financial data from various accounting and information systems to perform related reviews.


Manages

  • Manages the portfolio of Basic Science/Center departments and the completeness and accuracy of their financial activities.


Problem Solving

  • Advocates for Basic Science/Center departments to ensure they are receiving funding for their activities and can hire staff and faculty.


Thinking Critically

  • Monitors financial metrics performance, develops models and reports, and ensures two-way communications with departments to determine the financial performance and if a corrective action plan is warranted.


Trains/Communicates

  • Ensures department administrators have the necessary information, skills, and support to perform their financial activities.


Collaborates

  • Partner with Associate Director for Basic Science/Center departments, other FP&A analysts; SOM department directors, administrators, and staff; JHM/JHU Budget, Central Finance, JHM/JHHS/JHU Finance.


Additional Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Strong customer service orientation and focus on details, accuracy and meeting pre-determined deadlines.
  • Advanced knowledge in the use of the Microsoft Office suite of applications.
  • Proven communication, organizational, and analytic skills.
  • Ability to analyze data for budgeting, operations, auditing, accounts receivable, and reserve analysis.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the Johns Hopkins Medicine mission


Physical Requirements

  • Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.
  • Occasionally lifting, carrying objects weighing 10 lbs. or less.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or related field.
  • Five years progressively responsible related financial/accounting experience.
  • Advanced Excel skills, with demonstrated knowledge of Pivot tables, formulas and other functions
  • Additional education (master's in a related field) may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in research financial management and clinical department business operations.
  • SAP accounting knowledge
  • Experience in a complex organization

Total Rewards
The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing.
