Sr. Financial Analyst

The Division of Infectious Diseases has 80 faculty and over 400 staff and fellows and an operating budget of $80 million per year. We are seeking a Senior Financial Analyst  who will perform complex financial analysis and planning to provide management with data and recommendations used to establish financial goals and objectives.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Non-Sponsored Financial Management

  • Provides recommendations to critical financial business decisions. Performs financial and planning activities in support of various functions, e.g. budgeting, auditing, financial planning, taxes and consolidation. Extracts financial data from various accounting and information systems to perform complex statistical, cost and financial analyses of financial reports and data, and prepares subsequent narrative analysis for management.
  • Interprets and reviews data to evaluate and determines past financial performance and/or financial projections and assist management in making overall business decisions.
  • Serves as a key contributor in the development of the annual operating plan. Analyzes, coordinates and consolidates departmental financial information for the development of the divisional fiscal year annual operating budget.
  • Makes budget adjustments and implements other cost improvement measures. Uses appropriate cost rates, such as indirect and benefit rates for proposed budgets. Prepares and defends budget proposals to senior management.
  • Analyzes, extracts and defines relevant complex, financial data; plans and conducts complex studies to determine cost and financial results of business activities and improves the operational and financial effectiveness of the Division. Reviews financial needs and explores alternative financing methods

  • Develops and distributes periodic profit and loss statements by faculty, service line, and/or geography. May analyze and report on faculty productivity and related compensation.
  • Workflows day-to-day transactions, processing and/or approving cost & revenue transfers, invoices, purchase orders, procurement card, and expense reimbursements.
  • Reviews proposed operating and financial plans, including proposed program increases, estimated costs and expenses to finance proposed programs. Recommends course of action to improve financial performance.
  • Evaluates and analyzes capital expenditures proposals, profit plans, operating records and financial statements.
  • Monitors and maintains divisional control salary, default accounts, discretionary balances, and effort reporting. Advises on required action to resolve funding short falls.
  • Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, statistical packages and graphics package to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports.
  • Reconciles of IRB fees including monitoring account and making transfers to sponsored awards
  • Approves check requests and shopping carts for division
  • Serves as point of contact for the creation of new accounts and for transfers


Clinical Operations Financial Management

  • Develops, analyzes and maintains reports measuring physician productivity in the outpatient and inpatient setting
  • Prepares profit and loss statements for multiple clinics and specialties on a quarterly basis; analyzes variances for further investigation
  • Creates clinical operations scheduling dashboard: scheduling rates, no show rates, lag to new appointment, and percentage of new patients to maximize revenue and improve patient access to care; shares with clinical leadership; implements recommendations for improvement
  • Produces volume reports analyzing monthly trends by department and billing area
  • Submits the clinic charges and payments budget on an annual basis, which includes analyzing physician templates, average charge/collection rates, show/schedule rates, and resulting revenues
  • Analyzes the number of new/follow-up patients per provider and unique number of patients per provider for optimal panel sizes and clinic utilization; works with providers to regularly review templates
  • Reviews physician template structures based on statistical analysis to improve revenue
  • Requests epic access for providers
  • Reviews and resolves provider Epic open encounters to improve revenue and patient safety
  • Performs monthly audit of clinical charges
  • Provides analysis of billings by department and individual provider to maximize profitability
  • Monitors provider on call coverage transfers to ensure accuracy


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or related field
  • Five years progressively responsible related financial/accounting experience
  • Additional education(master's in a related field) may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula


Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of JHU SAP/BW system. Advanced ability in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word) is required.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to interact effectively with all levels of staff, faculty, and leadership is essential.
  • Serves as a representative of the Divisions and the Department of Medicine outside of the confines of the Divisional office space. Functions as a team player and works to maintain harmonious working relationships with coworkers, peers and supervisors.
