Sr. Human Resources Business Partner

Purpose of Position:

The Senior HR Business Partner at the Carey Business School provides comprehensive human resources support for managers and staff, including employee relations consultation, performance management and coaching, and recruiting coordination. The business partner serves as a trusted adviser and subject matter expert to coach employees and managers on sensitive work-related issues.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates a strong understanding of University policy, culture and values, and makes recommendations to resolve complex employment-related matters
  • Partners with Carey’s Executive Director of HR to implement solutions and meet goals around attracting, engaging, retaining, and developing talent.
  • Provides coaching and development feedback to managers and employees
  • Manages employee relations issues and advises management on performance management, coaching, termination and disciplinary processes.
  • Works to ensure workplace issues are properly identified, reported, investigated and resolved
  • Partners with various functions within University Human Resources (i.e. Talent Acquisition, Compensation, Organizational Development) to execute on deliverables and business-specific HR strategies
  • Responsible for coordinating the employment process by working with School hiring managers and central recruiting staff to recruit and onboard talent.
  • In consultation with Compensation team, provide guidance and make recommendations to the Department on appropriate starting salaries and promotional salaries for faculty and staff to ensure maintaining balance of equity.
  • Provide consultation to leaders and staff on interpretation of HR policy and procedures related to recruiting and employment, performance management, compensation, Family & Medical Leave (FML), STD, timekeeping (e210), and SAP data.
  • Responsible for exit interviews and exit procedures for employees leaving the school.
  • Manages and supports internal projects and programs, including school-wide engagement activities and recognition efforts.
  • Maintains and protects confidential data with great discretion, judgment, and professionalism.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned


Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or other related field from a regionally accredited college or university required.
  • Three years of related experience required.
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • 3-5 years of progressive experience in human resources; employee relations experience preferred
  • Master’s degree and/or professional HR certification, preferred.


Knowledge and Skill:

  • Exceptional interpersonal, coaching, and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Client service orientation and ability to interact with all levels of University employees.
  • Strong organizational skills, analytical and problem solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of principles and procedures for HR strategic and functional areas, especially employee relations and recruiting.  Additional familiarity with compensation and leave administration preferred.
  • Knowledge of relevant federal, state and local laws and regulations.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and act on decisions on a daily basis.
  • Ability to develop positive working relationships across the school and university community.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Project management skills and proven ability to prioritize and drive programs to implementation.
  • Analytical and data management skills
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of and experience using Microsoft Office Suite and HR database software; SAP experience preferred.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
