Sr. Instructional Designer

Purpose of Position:

The Senior Instructional Designer will provide vision, leadership, and coordination in designing, developing, and delivering courses and technology-enhanced instructional materials for intersession, pre-college programs, Summer term undergraduate, and graduate courses delivered by AAP. The Senior Instructional Designer will maintain AAP standards of excellence in course development and delivery, and act as a project lead in various assigned special projects necessary for the maintenance and development of online courses.

 

Knowledge and Skills:

Instructional Design

  • Must be service oriented, self-motivated, organized, and a detail-oriented team player who is capable of participating in collaborative instructional development processes and activities
  • In-depth understanding of learning theories and instructional design models
  • In-depth knowledge of multimedia (audio, graphics, and video)
  • In-depth Knowledge of and demonstrated ability to apply Instructional Design models/principles (Backward Design, ADDIE; etc.) to an online environment
  • Knowledge of various course assessment techniques and methods.  
  • Knowledge of cognitive theories of learning and motivation theories, (e.g. ARCS)
  • Ability to solve problems in enterprising and proactive ways
  • Ability to conduct quality reviews of existing online courses using Quality Matters rubric or other assessment tool
  • In-depth understanding of Section 508, UDL and applicable accessibility standards relating to online courses
  • Familiarity with copyright laws and creative commons

 

Technical

  • Experience with web-based course management tools (such as Blackboard) and online conferencing software (such as Zoom)
  • In-depth knowledge of course authoring tools (e.g., Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, etc.)
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, basic HTML editing software, and basic image manipulation software (Photoshop).
  • Experience on Mac and PC platforms.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging instructional technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to train one-on-one and in a group setting in a collaborative and professional way using multiple modalities

 

Managerial

  • Ability to supervise casual IRC team members and mentor instructional designers
  • Excellent time management skills, organizational skills, ability to prioritize tasks, and the ability to deal with multiple constituencies concurrently in a dynamic and fast-paced environment 
  • Ability to work independently to solve problems in enterprising and proactive ways 
  • Ability to monitor and report on status of assigned projects 
  • Ability to analyze data and communicate trends and issues
  • Ability to manage vendor projects

 

Collaborative

  • Communication skills (oral, written, and interpersonal) must be at a professional level
  • Must be able to work effectively with multiple constituencies in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment 
  • Requires a customer service orientation to work well with faculty, staff, and vendors 

 

Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification:

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Graduate degree in instructional design, instructional technology, education, or related field
  • Three years of professional level experience in course design and development, faculty training, or program/course assessment/evaluation required.
  • Significant additional related experience may substitute for advanced degree.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience should be demonstrated by 5 years experience in the field of higher education at a professional level in the areas of instructional design, instructional technology, or a closely related field is highly preferred.
  • Two to three years of online teaching experience at the higher education level is preferred.

 

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:

  • Demonstrated experience working with streaming audio and video, compression methods, file types and formats, and related software and platforms (i.e., Panopto, Camtasia Studio, Kaltura, etc.).
  • Proven ability to continually adapt and learn new procedures, systems, and software applications.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate using a variety of synchronous meeting tools (i.e., Zoom, Adobe Connect, Google Hangouts, Skype, etc.).
  • Demonstrated experience with learning management systems, Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, and course authoring tools (e.g., Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, etc.).

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

10% of Time Spent - Performance Management

  • Supervise casual or part-time IRC team members.
  • Mentor instructional designers, including helping to allocate team resources and coaching team members to maximum efficiency.

 

10% of Time Spent - ​​​​​​​Project Lead for Courses, Services, & Projects

  • Collaborate and consult with stakeholders on the effective use of instructional design strategies, web-based resources, multimedia technologies, and instructional software and systems to improve teaching for course delivery
  • Serve as project lead, directing teams with technical trainers, instructional technologist, web developers, multimedia specialists, and external vendors for course development and other special projects
  • Research and evaluate new and emerging technologies, instructional design theories, and policies for potential application to IRC services
  • Provide recommendations on the strategic, tactical and operational issues associated with the adoption of instructional technologies and instructional design processes
  • Assist with developing budget projections
  • Conduct necessary project analysis
  • Evaluate the instructional effectiveness of instructional design processes
  • Coordinate student help desk support

​​​​​​​60% of Time Spent -  Instructional Design

  • Lead the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation of complex courses, ensuring competency alignment among courses to achieve program objectives.
  • Consult with faculty to identify and integrate the appropriate instructional design and technologies needed to employ evidence-based instructional practices to enhance the learning process.
  • Collaborate and consult with faculty on the effective use of Web-based resources, multimedia technologies, and instructional strategies to develop or revise their courses
  • Provide recommendations for interface design, sequencing of instruction, active learning, and use of assessments activities.
  • Coordinate the development of instructional materials that are functional, informative, engaging, and consistent with sound instructional design principles, including alignment of course
  • objectives with learning activities, instructional resources, and assessments.
  • Create supporting material/media (simulations, role plays, games, case studies, etc.)
  • Utilize multimedia technology and authoring tools to develop interactive and engaging instructional resources including video, audio podcasts, and graphics
  • Research and evaluate new and emerging technologies, instructional design theories, and approaches and policies for potential application to instructional design.
  • Manage project timelines and coordinate with team members and partners to meet project deliverables
  • Collaborate with multimedia team to develop media products for use in online courses including presentations, video, audio podcasts, and graphics
  • Monitor and stay abreast of new and emerging technologies
  • Study and evaluate instructional design theories for application to a variety of program and department needs
  • Read and stay abreast of JHU and peer institutional best practices and evaluate them for potential application in instructional design at AAP

 

10% of Time Spent - Workshops

  • Plan, develop and implements workshops and other activities that will promote teaching, learning, and assessment in areas related to learning strategies, instructional strategies and technology, and student learning outcomes.
  • Conduct individual training and coaching for faculty to meet instructional design and development learning opportunities and needs

 

10% of Time Spent - Course Management

  • Manage intersession, pre-college programs and Summer Term undergraduate master course templates
  • Develop and maintain course site templates for intersession, pre-college programs and Summer Term undergraduate

Classified Title: Sr. Instructional Designer ​​

Starting Salary Range: $83,865 - $106,780, annually

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
