Sr. Intellectual Property Manager

Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures is seeking a Senior Intellectual Property Manager  (Sr. Technology Transfer Associate) who independently manages a docket of technologies and has advanced skills in strategic IP assessment and patenting strategies. Through interactions with faculty members, staff, students, and outside counsel, the Senior IP Manager develops IP strategy, manages patent prosecution and develops intellectual property assets for commercialization.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Evaluates new invention disclosure summaries including conducting inventor interviews, preliminary prior art analysis, and coordinating with licensing associates for commercialization activity.
  • Makes patenting decision within a set legal budget.
  • Focuses on inventor outreach and contact for patent related matters.
  • Interfaces with internal and external counsel to coordinate patent decisions within a fixed budget.
  • Develops IP protection strategy for inventions retained by the university in consultation with licensing staff, business analysts, inventors and IP counsel.  Implements the strategy.
  • Tracks and fulfills filing obligations for licensed technologies in portfolio.
  • Establishes and maintains contacts with industry IP managers, patent counsel and representatives at other academic institutions.


Scope of Responsibility:

  • Works under the direct supervision of the Director Intellectual Property Management in conducting all activities.


Decision Making:

  • Makes recommendations but not the final decision concerning investments and patent strategies. 



  • Does not direct the activities of staff or a function. 
  • May not commit JHU to patenting decision without prior approval.


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Candidate will have a working knowledge of strategic intellectual property planning and IP management and patenting that is typically gained through a minimum of 4 years of related intellectual property management experience. 
  • Prior university experience is desirable but corporate experience is highly preferred.
  • An advanced Degree in Life Science, Business or Law is required.
  • Registered Patent Agent required.


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident required due to federal export controls.
  • Previous experience with intellectual property management and the development of IP strategy.
  • Good organizational skills including ability to multi‐task and prioritize.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated skills in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to converse on scientific and technical matters in a variety of disciplines with investigators, outside counsel and non‐scientific staff.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization and to work in a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
