Sr. Research Assistant

General Summary/Purpose


The Sr. Graduate Research assistant will provide support for the research project “From Jedi Knight to Jedi Master: Discovering the New Master of Health Professions Educator Leader.” The goals of the research are to evaluate: 1) the attributes that enable health professionals’ response preparedness for public health emergencies and 2) whether these qualities can be nurtured to prepare health professionals to act effectively in uncertain, emergency circumstances. The Sr. Graduate Research Assistant will provide research and development support for project-specific tasks and activities and will be responsible for carrying out other project activities as assigned, contributing to the completion of project tasks and deliverables. The position is intended for the duration of the study which will begin in Spring 2021 and extend through February 2023.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


The Sr. Graduate Research assistant will provide assistance with a variety of research tasks, including but not limited to:


  • Recruit study participants, develop interview guides, conduct qualitative interviews, and code and analyze qualitative data.
  • Assist with manuscript writing and grant proposal preparation
  • Coordinate project tasks and timelines and maintain project calendar. 
    • Communicate with partners and external colleagues and coordinate communications among project team members. 
    • Schedule meetings
  • Create meeting agendas and take minutes and disseminate meeting notes. 
  • Review recorded meetings and pull out procedures keeping records of these procedures
    • Participate in data collection activities, writing and editing research reports, articles, conference presentations, and other project-related products. 
    • Responsible for cleaning data, creating data tables, coding open-ended survey responses, updating the text of reports following a pre-existing format, and proofreading reports. 
  • Assist with other administrative duties as needed. 


Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline.
  • Two years of related experience.
  • Additional graduate level education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. . 


JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Masters-level health professions degree – Ph.D. strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with Internal Review Boards.
  • Familiarity with qualitative data analysis software, like NVivo, Dedoose, or Atlas.
  • Experience with Cloud platforms such as Zoom or Teams for purposes of conducting meetings and other related business functions.
  • Analytical skills such as experience examining data


Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


  • Experience with grounded theory approaches to qualitative research
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong organization and time-management skills;

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
