Sr. Research Assistant

General Description

Works with faculty and staff in the Division of Infectious Diseases, supporting the Center for Innovative Diagnostics and Infectious Diseases. The Senior Research Assistant will be responsible for maintaining accurate and up-to-date regulatory files for Center studies, preparing IRB submissions, participating in budgeting and account monitoring, and participating in the compilation and analysis of data.  

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Regulatory

  • Serve as a central resource regarding IRBs for Center faculty who are conducting research.
  • Work with investigators during protocol development to ensure that regulatory and human subjects requirements are met and that protocol language is complete and consistent.
  • Obtain all required U.S. and international documents for new submissions and/or amendments to the Johns Hopkins IRB. Track applications through the submission process, evaluate recurring problems, and develop and implement systems to decrease approval process delays.
  • Communicate with the IRB and address questions they may have about study applications.
  • Participate in research management meetings and conference calls as needed.

 

Budgeting and Accounts

  • Develop preliminary budgets for research studies.
  • Monitor accounts, complete budget distributions, and initiate necessary account transfers at least monthly. 
  • Receive, process, and track invoices and submit expense paperwork.
  • Prepare subcontract and independent contractor paperwork as requested.
  • Collaborate with manager to prepare monthly and annual scientific and administrative reports to Center personnel and sponsors.
  • Arrange meetings and manage research and office supplies as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Data Coordination

  • Participate in administering surveys as requested.
  • Extract and compile study data and verify data quality. Develop data quality tracking systems as needed.
  • Assist in data analysis by compiling data to look at trends.
  • Conduct literature reviews as requested
  • Coordinate or contribute to reports under the guidance of study investigators.

Education

  • Requires Bachelor’s Degree in related discipline. Additional education may substitute for some experience.
  • Requires minimum of 3 years’ experience in academic or industry-based clinical research.

 

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • General computer skills, with experience with Microsoft Office required.
  • Experience with Microsoft Access preferred.
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Outstanding organizational skills required.
  • Excellent attention to detail skills required.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once, and effectively prioritize each.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
