Sr. Research Data Analyst

General Summary:

The Sr. Research Data Analyst will be responsible for data management, analysis, and visualization for the India Clinical Research portfolio under Dr. Amita Gupta, the Deputy Director of the Center for Clinical Global Health Education (CCGHE) at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. This person will collaborate with U.S.- and India-based investigators to conduct bioinformatics and biostatistical analyses for infectious disease research studies conducted primarily in India, but also at partner sites in other countries. Additionally, preparation and analysis of US-based COVID-19 datasets will be pursued. Projects include multi-country clinical trials of TB treatment and prevention in adults, prospective cohorts of HIV/TB cases and household contacts, biomarker discovery studies for advancing TB diagnostics and vaccines, and timely analysis of COVID-19 treatment efficacy and severity prediction. The Data Scientist must believe in team science but be able to work independently to complete analyses. They must be comfortable cleaning and analyzing large longitudinal datasets, as well as working with high-dimensional datasets with genetic and immunological variables. 


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop statistical analysis plans for complex clinical research projects.
  • Build and manage databases, including relational databases and analyzable datasets.
  • Prepare data for analysis by conducting data checks and cleaning, data extraction and transfer, creating data dictionaries, merging datasets, and creating/recoding variables.
  • Conduct biostatistical analysis using a range of standard analytical techniques, including regression, nonparametric methods, and machine learning approaches.
  • Conduct bioinformatics data analysis working in a command line environment on high-performance computing clusters (e.g. MARCC). Ability to perform batched sample analysis including QC, adapter trimming, alignment of next generation sequencing data, and subsequent additional analysis. Projects would additionally require generating RNAseq count data for differential expression analysis, SNP analysis for resistance prediction, and strain-relatedness analysis. 
  • Create and maintain systems for archiving analytic results and other research information.
  • Present and summarize analyses in various formats including raw output, tables, graphics, and oral/written reports for review by investigators.
  • Collaborate with investigators to interpret findings and contribute to manuscript writing.
  • Write statistical analysis sections for funding applications, research protocols and manuscripts.
  • Prepare tables and graphs for manuscripts.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s in epidemiology, applied mathematics, data science, biostatistics or related field required, and minimum of one year of relevant professional experience.
  • Demonstrated ability on significant graduate project or additional doctoral education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 4 years of relevant professional experience is preferred. Relevant Ph.D may substitute for experience.


Special knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Applied knowledge of advanced biostatistics and bioinformatics methods with proficiency in multiple statistical software packages, such as R and Python.
  • Excellent data management skills with proficiency in multiple data management tools, such as Microsoft Access, SQL, and RedCap.
  • Strong familiarity with epidemiologic principles.
  • Prior experience with microarray data analysis and molecular epidemiology with skills in network and cluster analyses preferred.
  • Prior computer programming knowledge and/or experience using machine learning for large datasets preferred.
  • Strong data visualization skills. Experience generating figures for network and omics analyses preferred.
  • Ability to act proactively and independently, exercising good judgment, thinking creatively to overcome challenges related to data management and statistical analysis.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
