Sr. Research Data Manager

The Division of Brain Injury Outcomes (BIOS) in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is seeking a Sr. Research Data Manager.  The Sr. Research Data Manager will work as a key member of a research team with primary responsibility for oversight of collection, organization, management and reporting of research data for complex, multi-center or longitudinal studies with oversight of other JHU staff, contribute advanced analysis and programming skills, and act as primary contact for multi-center study staff in regard to data issues. The successful candidate will be expected to operate independently, with guidance provided by BIOS leadership. 


This position reports to the BIOS Faculty and leadership and will serve as a knowledgeable liaison between the BIOS leadership and the research communities.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage the data management section of clinical research projects within the Division of Brain Injury Outcomes (BIOS).
  • Develop database applications.
  • Serve as a member of the BIOS Data Management Core and on the analysis team for individual projects.
  • Provide data analytic support.
  • Design, build, and manage database systems for BIOS infrastructure and provide analytic reports for quality assurance and to drive process improvement.
  • Design, build, and manage large, complex, longitudinal databases for research projects.
  • Participate with the PI and other senior level management staff in the overall planning for the research group.
  • Provide technical expertise in design and development of database applications to monitor research activities and process and maintain incoming data for research sites and subjects.
  • Assess information needs of research groups and design and implement computerized applications to meet needs.
  • Train and supervise data management, site management, and research assistant staff within each project. Oversee function of external staff in relation to data management.
  • Aid with conducting sophisticated computer programming and statistical modeling, using computing languages such as C and S+, and statistical software such as SAS and SPSS.
  • Help develop grant proposals, project reports, and manuscripts for publication, such as providing assistance in study design, sample size, and study power estimation, and data analysis plan.
  • Provide secondary IT support for the Division.
  • Design, build, and manage training courses and other content on the BIOS website.
  • Integrate with the BIOS Imaging Core team projects such as collaborations with VISTA ICH and Google to provide programming support and relational data inventory and management
  • Integrate with JHU institutional systems and processes to understand workflows and relation to BIOS processes (for example, the Single Institutional Review Board submission and review systems and processes)


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline. Master's Degree preferred.
  • Five (5) years of related experience, with background and experience in research , federal and regulatory issues, research ethics, regulatory compliance, and project management.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in related discipline preferred.
  • Ability to make independent judgments and to act on decisions on a daily basis.
  • Ability to work for long periods of time without direction.
  • Ability to prioritize own work and work of others as needed.
  • Ability to work with flexibility on several tasks simultaneously and to meet various concurrent deadlines.
  • Very strong organizational skills, analytical and problem solving abilities, and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate projects independently and work constructively as part of a team.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.

Starting Salary Range: $54,080-$74,390 Annually (Commensurate with experience)
