Sr. Research Nurse

The Department of Psychiatry, Behavioral Pharmacology Research Unit is seeking a Sr. Research Nurse. This position is responsible for providing quality nursing assessment, patient advocacy, safety, interventions, and compassionate care. Engage in continuous professional development and inter-professional communication as benefits the research process and patient health and experience.


The Sr. Research Nurse conducts experimental research sessions, coordinate protocol training for the inpatient research unit, assist with protocol development and troubleshooting as a study team member, and perform data handling functions as required per protocol.  Responsible for oversight of supervision of Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Registered Nurses (RNs) as necessary.


Duties and Responsibilities:


Nursing Expectations

Provide nursing support for physical examinations, patient history, phlebotomy, IV placement, capnography, and other licensed RN interventions as needed per protocol.

Be knowledgeable regarding BPRU’s guidelines for the collection of research data and standardized methods of data management.

  • Complete inventory of medical supplies on the nursing unit.
  • Maintain emergency and rescue medication inventory.
  • Administer medications per physician’s order and monitor for effects.
  • Assess potential and current research participants to review drug histories and symptomology, medical information, and physiological changes.
  • Alert medical staff to abnormal lab values, test results, or physical assessments for follow-up.
  • Process blood specimens in accordance with internal and external lab procedures (e.g., Quest, Lab Corp, ACM).
  • Anticipate participant needs and initiate action to meet those needs.
  • Identify quality improvement opportunities for participant safety.
  • Provide timely feedback in a clear and concise manner.
  • Conduct interviews and nursing assessments with research participants of diverse socio-economic and racial backgrounds.
  • Coordinate with Clinical Engineering to ensure calibration of BPRU medical equipment as required by manufacturer’s recommendations and JHBMC policy.
  • Analyze and operate technical and scientific equipment and perform required tests with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Assist in coordination of repair of faulty equipment.
  • Adhere to and promote safety procedures and standard precautions at all times. Contribute to the safety and security of the nursing unit environment through personal actions.
  • Treat research participants with courtesy, respect, and caring behaviors.


Research Expectations:

  • Witness consent procedures.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities.
  • Know, understand, and abide by Johns Hopkins University and BPRU policies and procedures and seek clarification as needed.
  • In collaboration with others, initiate development and implementation of new policies and procedures.
  • Attend and contribute to study team meetings, as needed.
  • Use professional judgment in providing information based on specific situations and is sensitive to individual and organizational concerns.
  • Follow appropriate channels and keep staff informed of relevant issues and events.
  • Consistently ensure that information is kept private and confidential.
  • Adhere to and apply HIPAA regulations and standards of Good Clinical Practices.
  • Responsible for running research protocol sessions with human volunteers, collecting physiological and behavioral data.
  • Conduct data collection tasks including but not limited to collection of urine, blood, and saliva samples, electrocardiograms, administration of self-report questionnaires, direct observation and rating and recording of subject's condition, monitoring of physiological measures, pupillometry.


Supervisory Expectations:

  • Recruit, interview and hire research staff, submit and monitor requisitions for new hires, conduct reference checks. 
  • Supervise LPNs and RNs. Complete 120-day evaluations and annual performance reviews. Document performance issues and work with other BPRU supervisors and human resources in the disciplinary process.  
  • Provide initial and ongoing training to nursing staff (e.g., phlebotomy, bio specimen processing and storage, and breathalyzer administration), ensure trainings are up-to-date, and develop trainings to address the changing landscape of research. 
  • Advocate and provide support and guidance to the nursing staff, serve as mediator in disagreements, and recommend solutions. 
  • Support employees in career development opportunities and promote opportunities for personal growth and development. 
  • Maintain new hire orientation materials and job descriptions.

Minimum Qualifications:

Individual must be a registered nurse, licensed in the State of Maryland or state where practicing.  Bachelor's degree in nursing or related discipline required. Master's degree strongly preferred.  Minimum of two years’ experience in the specialty or a related area required.  Additional experience may substitute for bachelor's degree. Related master's degree may be considered in lieu of experience.  Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR certification required.  Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.  Acceptable completion of the BMC credentialing process.


JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.  


Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree. Experience with industry sponsored research, electronic data capture systems, source documentation, and GCP.

  • Excellent written communications skills in a variety of forms, print material, website content, speeches, and publicity materials.
  • Enthusiasm and willingness to learn about the work of the department as well to acquire new technical skills as needed.
  • Excellent organizational skills to work effectively in an environment that requires balancing multiple assignments.


Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.  Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s).  Ability to move standard equipment and supplies through a hospital or clinical environment; usually less than 25 pounds. Ability to move about the work environment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
