Sr. Research Program Manager

General summary/purpose:

The Johns Hopkins Center for Population Health IT (CPHIT) is the R&D home of the widely used Johns Hopkins ACG® System.  It is also the home of cutting-edge health informatics R&D activities applied to health care delivery and public health. The Center is seeking a senior, supervisory healthcare researcher with previous experience working in the area of health care analytics ideally including predictive modeling and case-mix / risk adjustment applied to US health care organizations.

The research manager will help lead and actively participate in research and development activities of The Johns Hopkins ACG® System as well as other innovative research activities in the population health domain.  The work will rely on a wide range of electronic data sources including electronic health records (EHRs), health insurance claims data and GIS/social determinant data.

A successful candidate will oversee the research agenda of a team of seasoned analysts and programmers, faculty investigators and graduate students.  The Research Manager will have an opportunity to contribute substantively to the award-winning ACG System, a global population health analytic methodology now in use in 20+ nations to manage the care of over 150+ million patients. (www.hopkinsacg.org).   ACGs are one of the largest academic technology transfer successes of its type in the US.  CPHIT is also a global leader in developing new cutting-edge population focused tools for use by health care delivery and payment organizations and public health agencies relying on EHRs and other novel types of data sources.

The Center (http://www.jhsph.edu/cphit) is housed within the Department of Health Policy and Management of the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) Bloomberg School of Public Health. The team collaborates closely with other departments at JHU’s Schools of Public Health, Medicine, Nursing on the Medical campus, as well as the Department of Computer Science, on the JHU’s main “Homewood” Campus and the JHU Applied Physics Laboratory (APL).  CPHIT also collaborates very closely with the Johns Hopkins Health System and several other leading integrated delivery systems and government health agencies. The distribution and business management of the ACG System is handled by business units within the Johns Hopkins Health System and collaborating IT integrator corporations around the globe.  The manger will help coordinate the transfer of the JHU R&D into the software distribution pipeline with these partners.

We are seeking someone with a terminal advanced degree (e.g., PhD or MD).  Ideally the candidate will have extensive experience working with health care data. Familiarity with the US health care system, insurance claims process, and risk/case-mix adjustment is preferred.  Knowledge of electronic health records systems and health informatics in general is desirable.

 

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

  •  

Master's degree r PhD in related discipline.

8 years related experience including significant experience in field cnducting large research projects.

 

  • Independently frame and manage research projects
  • Develop and maintain a current a strategic plan for ongoing research
  • Provide technical expertise in the design and development of analytic plans
  • Conduct hands on analyses (as time allows) using advanced computer programming and statistical modeling resources such as using SAS or R
  • Help serve as liaison with external partner organizations
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to incorporate their ideas into the research agenda
  • Prepare presentations and manuscripts on current research
  • Support the translation of research into product specifications and documentation
  • Maintain oversight of the research budget and ongoing research activities
  • Manage internal knowledge and data assets pertaining to ACG development
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Ideally, a relevant advanced terminal degree, such as:
    • PhD in Cmputer Sciences, Informatics, Biostatistics, or a closely related field;
    • PhD r DrPH in Health Services Research, Health economics or a closely related field;
    • MD (r equivalent) and relevant health analytics experience

 

  • Moderate to advanced hands on analytics skills using large health care databases as described above. (E.g., working in SAS or R)
  • Previous post in an academic or scientificbased non-academic settings transferring research or new methods into practical tools and products is preferred. 
  • Solid grounding in health services research and/or public health/ population health methods
  • Experience with software or IT systems development a plus
  • Project management, including development of work plans and timelines, budgeting, and supervision of staff.  Work applied to software development a plus

 

Since advanced knowledge of English is a requirement, the applicant must have one or more degrees from an English speaking university or several years of work experience in an English speaking setting.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
