Sr. Research Specialist II

The Transgenic Core serves the Johns Hopkins Community as well as the world-wide scientific community.  We are seeking a Senior Research Specialist II  who will work under minimal supervision as an experienced microinjectionist and will be interacting and working with Transgenic/Gene-targeting Core Facility personnel to provide transgenic services in a full-scale production setting. This individual will make intellectual contributions in a specialized scientific lab and have extensive knowledge of research and how laboratory organizations satisfies research goals and objectives.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  •  Primary responsibilities will include microinjection of CRISPR reagents, plasmids and ES cells, sperm and embryo cryopreservation, IVF and all supporting activities.
  • The candidate will also be expected to contribute to the development of a new genotyping service to support the development operations of the Core. This includes designing new PCR protocols to screen new lines, PCR genotyping and results interpretation.
  • Develop, design and manage specialized projects.
  • Utilize specialized knowledge to interpret research results.
  • Independently perform all research assays specific to the research laboratory interests.
  • Troubleshoot and apply specialized scientific knowledge and experience to make decisions, train and guide other laboratory personnel.
  •   Perform miscellaneous laboratory related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences or related field plus six years in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques. (2-4 years-experience with laboratory techniques necessary for creating new animal models.)
  • Master's Degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits (semester hours)  may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in a related field.


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills, ability to exercise professional judgment and good written and oral communication skills is required.
  • The position may require flexible working hours to meet laboratory demands. 
  • Advanced practical knowledge of molecular biology or related field. Experience with developing and implementing PCR genotyping strategies for mutations.

Starting Salary Range: $61,550 - $84,700 annually (commensurate with experience)

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
