Sr. Research Specialist

We are seeking a Sr. Research Specialist. The position requires a proficient and experienced laboratory scientist with a solid foundation in molecular biology and tissue culture. Experience with rodent experiments will be a plus. After introduced to the techniques and platforms, the successful candidate will conduct research independently or with minimal supervision. With limited supervision by the PI, this individual will design and perform laboratory experiments, analyze data, and may also contribute to manuscripts. This position will provide training to other individuals who may be assigned to the laboratory on a regular or temporary basis.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs routine and complex research laboratory, including sterile cell culture, molecular biology techniques and small rodent handling.
  • Independently processes and analyzes data, formulates conclusions and creates appropriate statistical presentations, including graphs and charts, for the purpose of reporting research/laboratory results, grant reports or scientific presentations.
  • Conducts a variety of experiments where methodologies are established including tissue harvesting, isolation of cell population, cell culture, preparation of samples for flow cytometry, DNA extraction, PCR, RT-PCR, and develops or assists in the development of new techniques as needed.
  • Meet regularly with PI and colleagues to review lab data, troubleshoot problems, prioritize tasks and discuss newly published scientific literature relevant to the cell and gene therapy field.
  • Works collaboratively with research fellows, post-docs, medical students, and other laboratory personnel and is keen to troubleshoot.
  • Monitors inventory levels and orders material and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Keep the laboratory prepared for safety inspections.
  • Will have supervisory responsibility for two graduate and one undergraduate students


Additional Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to use various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or test reports.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • Four years experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques.
  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
