OMIM, the online version of Mendelian Inheritance in Man, is a compendium of bibliographic material and observations on inherited disorders and genes maintained by geneticists and molecular biologists.  This knowledgebase is updated continuously and is available internationally via the World Wide Web.  The Sr. Medical Writer will be responsible for evaluating and summarizing relevant information from the biomedical literature according to OMIM style.  The Sr. Medical Writer will also be responsible creating clinical synopses and assisting in classification and naming of genetic disorders.  The Sr. Medical Writer is integral to maintaining the scientific integrity of OMIM.  This position is responsible to the Editorial Director. 

 

Specific duties & responsibilities:

  • Read and scan articles describing genetic disorders/phenotypes
  • Evaluate clinical description in relation to medical subspeciality, nosology, and practice, as well as to existing clinical entities in OMIM
  • Assess information for clinical accuracy and validity of proposed gene-phenotype relationships, including using online tools for variant analysis (e.g., ExAC, gnomAD).
  • Identify additional articles that may be needed for adequate coverage of a topic.
  • Summarize relevant information from articles for incorporation into OMIM entries and Clinical Synopsis.
  • Assist in classification and naming of genetic disorders
  • Revise and reorganize catalogue entries, as directed by the Editorial Director and Program Manager.
  • Correspond with scientific community, as necessary, to clarify inconsistencies and problems in the literature.

 

 

Qualifications:

Masters degree in related field and five years clinical experience.  Excellent writing skills and a good familiarity with medical, genetic, and biochemical terminology are required.

 

Preferred:

Masters in Genetic Counseling or MD; Experience with the use of online genetics resources and knowledge database maintenance is highly desirable

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
