Staff Psychiatrist - Casual

The Counseling Center (CC) is seeking a Staff Psychiatrist  to work part-time for a total of 15 – 30 hours per week (more hours during semesters and less during the summer). The duties of the position are to provide psychiatric services to students including: evaluations, medication prescribing and monitoring, and consultation with CC clinicians. At this time, the CC is providing both in-person and remote services to students, with all of these services provided by staff who are on-location at the CC. This is a casual position, meaning the person in this role will be paid by the hour and will not be eligible for university benefits.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

On-Site Office Hours Availability

  • Provide psychiatric services for times as determined by agreement.
  • Will be readily available during office hours during emergency situations for consultation and assistance. 
  • Changes in on-site hours and times must be made in advance and communicated to the Associate Director of Clinical Services or their designee in writing.

 

Availability After Work Hours

  • Not typically on an after-hour schedule but must be willing to assist on-call emergency CC staff after work hours as needed for psychiatric emergencies. 
  • Information must be provided to allow CC to obtain psychiatric assistance from the Psychiatrist during after hour emergencies.

 

Case Conferences/Management Meetings

  • Although attendance at these meetings is not a regular requirement, the Psychiatrist must be willing to attend meetings to address staff policies, procedures, and practices as is appropriate and necessary.

 

Client Evaluations

  • Duties include the assessment of CC clients for psychiatric conditions upon referral by CC staff. 
  • Make psychiatric diagnosis and prescribe medication as appropriate. 
  • If medication is necessary, the Psychiatrist will prescribe and monitor medication or refer as appropriate.
  • Also, the Psychiatrist’s duties will include assessments and recommendations of medical conditions as they are relevant to treatment.
  • Should also maintain communication regarding the treatment regimen with CC staff.
  • On an emergency basis, the Psychiatrist must be available to assess need for hospitalization and assist with the hospitalization process.

 

Charts & Notes  

  • Must maintain appropriate notes in the client files and in the Center’s Titanium Scheduler consistent with the standards of the profession. 
  • The Psychiatrist completes logs and other relevant client information/forms that pertain to his/her work with the client.

 

Hospitalization Assistance

  • The Psychiatrist may be asked to assist with hospitalization at nearby emergency rooms and psychiatric hospitals as needed. 
  • Must be capable and qualified to assist in the assessment and in the hospitalization (either voluntary or involuntary) of students who need these services.  
  • Must also be willing to cooperate with other psychiatrists and staff of CC to plan and/or treat clients and assist in arranging for the timely transport of students to the appropriate in-patient facility. 
  • Finally, the Psychiatrist may be asked to help coordinate follow up services after hospitalization and serve as a liaison between the community psychiatric facilities/hospitals and the CC and other CC psychiatric staff as needed.                                            

 

Center Administrative Role

  • The Psychiatrist must be available to the Counseling Center Associate Director of Clinical Services to assist in the review of emergency procedures and the formulation of improved delivery of psychiatric services as directed.
  • Will provide consultative services to University officials when deemed appropriate and necessary.

 

Training & Supervision

  • The Psychiatrist may be asked to play a participatory role in the Counseling Center’s psychology internship training program.

 

Time Off

  • The Psychiatrist must inform the Associate Director of Clinical Services of the Counseling Center or their designee in writing (via Psychiatric Leave Form) and at least one month in advance when they intend to take vacation or is aware that extended sick leave will be needed.
  • The Psychiatrist must also arrange for alternative coverage to cover the number of hours missed working with the Associate Director of Clinical Services or their designee. The Counseling Center reserves the right to reduce compensation for hours that are missed and not covered by the Psychiatrist.

 

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • M.D. from accredited Medical School
  • All residency and post-graduate training from accredited American programs.
  • Presently Board Certified.
  • Licensed to practice psychiatry in the State of Maryland.
  • Must be eligible and must maintain at own expense at all times, while working at JHU, a policy or policies of professional liability insurance written by one or more responsible insurance carriers, to protect against all claims for injury to or death of persons or loss or damage to property in connection with the psychiatric services provided to the University.  
  • 5 years experience as a psychiatrist preferred
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience working with college students in the area of mental health is preferred. 
  • Hospital privileges or access to a local hospital, preferably with in-patient mental health facilities, is preferred.

 

Applicants who do not meet the posted requirements but are completing their final academic semester/quarter will be considered eligible for employment and may be asked to provide additional information confirming their academic completion date.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination.
