Staff Psychologist - Therapist / Liaison with under-represented populations

General summary/purpose:


University Health Services (UHS) is a member of the Johns Hopkins University Student Health & Well-Being (SHWB) practice group, which supports wellness, primary care and mental health services for JHU students and learners across all nine schools within the university.  In addition to the SHWB wellness office, our integrated service delivery model provides in-person primary and mental health care options at our clinics as well as remote support though phone and online resources.


University Health Services, the Johns Hopkins medical campus student health service, is seeking a psychologist to serve in our University Health- Mental Health (UHS-MH) program. This psychologist position will include a significant focus on providing services for African American/Black students and other Persons of Color (POC) and LGBTQ populations, as well as serving as a resource for other clinicians in the office.  This person is expected to work collaboratively with our stakeholders and learners to support the needs of the university’s BIPOC students and learners. 


As with all UHS-MH staff, this person will also provide a full range of clinical services to all East Baltimore students and learners as part of the UHS clinical team. The psychologist will provide therapy, assessment, consultation and crisis intervention to our population of graduate and professional students, house staff, post-doctoral fellows, trainees and their eligible spouses. The therapy provided will be brief with the exception of patients with psychiatric illness who may benefit from long-term therapy.



Specific duties & responsibilities:


  • Provides expert clinical care to African American/Black students and other Persons of Color (POC) and LGBTQ populations, serving as a resource for other clinicians in the office.


  • Works and consults with clinicians in other counseling offices in the SHWB practice group who are providing similar services to BIPOC students and learners to provide a comprehensive approach to outreach and treatment efforts.


  • Utilizes brief psychotherapy methods, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy or Interpersonal Therapy techniques, to treat patients collaboratively with the treating psychiatrist. 


  • Maintains a caseload of clients, which may be heavy and challenging at times. Flexes work hours to add additional slots as requested during times of high seasonal demand for services, such as during the fall or spring.   


  • Continues to see clients as long as medically indicated, as determined in collaboration with the treating psychiatrist and/or the Director of University Health Services-Mental Health.


  • Terminates therapy when clients are unlikely to benefit from continuing therapy and sees clients as often as necessary to manage their acute crisis with a goal of getting them to their pre-crisis level of functioning. 


  • Continually assesses the needs of current clients with the collaborating psychiatrist to determine therapy frequency, duration and scope.


  • Documents all encounters with clients and maintains records in accordance with University and professional standards. Completes all required electronic documentation in Titanium Schedule and/or other electronic record used by the program.
  • Consults with and/or facilitates timely and appropriate referrals to other professional staff, as well as to other Departments on- or off-campus, as appropriate.
  • Participates in the development and maintenance of accurate and comprehensive referral files.
  • Transitions clients needing continuing care to outside mental health professionals within 90 days of graduation when indicated.
  • Conducts initial evaluations and phone triages as per the clinic’s triage schedule. Sees triaged clients who require further evaluation and therapy on his/her schedule within two weeks of the initial triage phone call.
  • Creates a warm and welcoming clinical environment where students and trainees feel supported and respected as they pursue their personal, academic and professional goals. 
  • Interfaces with other professionals when clinically appropriate for patient care. Seeks clinical supervision when appropriate. Attends required team meetings for collaboration with UHS-MH staff. Attends continuing professional education activities as required to maintain certification.
  • Follows UHS policies and procedures as outlined in administrative meetings, internal documents, emails and memoranda and assists with the shaping and implementation of such policies as requested. 
  • Promptly reports all clinical issues that might affect our students and trainees to the UHS-MH Clinical Director. Promptly reports all administrative issues that might arise to the UHS-MH Program Manager and the UHS Clinical Practice Manager for resolution. 

  • Follows UHS policy regarding coverage of clients when requesting leave or vacation. 
  • Utilizes telemedicine, as appropriate, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Participates in equitable on-call back-up, after-hours, holidays and on weekends, with all mental health providers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Computer or other special needs for the position:

Knowledge of Microsoft Word and facility in electronic communications are required. Knowledge of Excel helpful.  Will need to be trained in the use of the UHS-MH electronic scheduling and medical records systems.


Degree of independent action performed on the job:

Must possess the ability to function independently; clinical supervision to be provided by staff psychiatrist and/or psychiatrist clinical director.


Internal and external contacts required as part of the job:

Interacts with students and trainees on the east Baltimore medical campus: medical students, nursing students, house staff, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and their families, as well as with faculty and staff of both the Hospital and University, and with community professionals. Facilitates triage and care of acute cases and emergencies.


Minimum qualifications



  • Doctoral degree in psychology is required. 
  • Knowledge of cognitive behavioral therapy, Interpersonal therapy or dialectical behavioral techniques is helpful.
  • Two years clinical experience in the field of psychology required, three or more preferred. Licensed to practice in the State of Maryland required. 
  • Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Additional supervision and training post-licensure preferred.
  • Experience with college and/or graduate and professional students and young adult population preferred


Special skills and knowledge:


  • Must possess skills in supportive therapy and problem solving skills, differential diagnosis of complex mental health problems, judgment regarding when to seek supervision, experience with the phenomenology and treatment of major mental illness and suicide and/or violent or homicidal behaviors.
  • Special expertise and experience working with BIPOC and LGBTQ populations and in particular African American and Black students.  
  • Experience/expertise with issues related to racial trauma.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Commitment to one’s own ongoing development of multicultural competence as a psychologist. Some experience in assessing and/or treating individuals with personality disorders. 
  • Experience in workplace/student issues and substance abuse are helpful.


Related work experience:

  • A minimum of two years of experience in the field of clinical social work is strongly preferred. 
  • Additional supervision and training post-licensure preferred.
  • Experience with college and/or graduate and professional students and young adult population preferred.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
