Staff Social Worker


General Summary:

The Counseling Center is seeking 1-3 part-Time, temporary Social Workers for the Counseling Center. The duties of this position are focused on intake assessment, short-term oriented individual counseling, and daytime emergency on-call coverage. Total work hours will range from approximately 15 to 28 hours per week and the total hours may be filled by as few as 1 or as many as 3 part-time temporary positions.


Note: This position is not benefits eligible.


Essential Job Functions:

  1. Maintains clinical case load of individual student clients.
  2. Provides intake assessments and when appropriate makes referral to consulting psychiatrists and appropriate community agencies. 
  3. Provides daytime emergency on-call service including triage and crisis intervention.
  4. Maintains case management notes in a timely and complete manner; completes all related paperwork as required by Center.
  5. Attends weekly clinical case management meeting.
  6. Provides consultation services to University community, parents, and others concerned with student-life problems.
  7. Participates in Counseling Center research activities.


Generally, will be minimally supervised by an assigned Associate Director or licensed staff psychologist at the designation of the Director.



  • Master’s in Social Work.


Licensure, Certification, Registration:      

  • LCSW-C (Licensed Certified Social Worker–Clinical) in MD required.



  • Two years’ experience. Experience in a University Counseling Center is desirable; experience conducting intake assessments; experience providing short-term oriented counseling; evidence of providing services to a diverse population.


Special Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities:      

  • Working with a college student population a plus.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
