Standardized Patient/PETA/GUTA
The Johns Hopkins Medicine Simulation Center (JHMSC) is seeking a Standardize Patient/PETA/GUTA dedicated to supporting the growing use of simulation methodologies throughout medical education and professional practice. It provides consultative and supportive services for curriculum development, innovative instructional strategies, assessment methods, and faculty development in simulations for Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (JHUSOM) and the Johns Hopkins Hospital (JHH) as well as other Johns Hopkins Health System (JHHS) and Johns Hopkins University entities (Bayview Medical Center, School of Nursing, etc.) and external clients. The JHMSC has a special interest in resuscitation, crisis resource management, and simulation-based research. In an effort to advance the science of medical education and patient safety, simulations are conducted within the JHMSC and in the clinical environment (“in situ”).
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Standardized Patients portray a common complaint/condition for educational and/or assessment events.
A Standardized Patient (SP) must be able
- Standardize the portrayal of emotional and physical aspects of patients or patient family members.
- Allow learners to practice physical health assessment techniques.
- Accurately evaluate learners and deliver written and/or verbal feedback.
In addition to being a Standardized Patient, an individual may take on advanced roles as a Physical Examination Teaching Associate (PETA) or as a Genitourinary Teaching Associate (GUTA). These are optional, specialized roles that require additional expertise.
A Physical Examination Teaching Associate (PETA) must be able to,
- Utilize your body to instruct learners on the correct techniques for performing some or all of the following examinations: neurological, abdominal, head & neck, cardiovascular, pulmonary, musculoskeletal.
- Evaluate learners’ skills to perform examinations.
A Genitourinary Teaching Associate (GUTA) must be able to,
- Females: Utilize your body to instruct learners on the correct techniques for performing a routine female breast and pelvic examination. Instruct learners in physician/patient communications.
- Males: Utilize your body to instruct learners on the correct techniques for performing a routine male genital and rectal examination. Instruct learners in physician/patient communications.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Communicate articulately.
- Provide constructive feedback.
- Observe and remember learners’ behavior for accurately evaluating their competencies.
- Possess interpersonal skills when working with clinical learners.
- If an SP, must be able to portray real patients.
- If a GUTA or a PETA, must be comfortable with discussing and demonstrating her/his own anatomy with others.
- GUTA females must have uterus, breast, and ovaries intact. Breast implants are acceptable, as are variant anatomical presentations.
- GUTA males must have reproductive organs and rectum intact.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or graduation equivalent.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Related work experience as a standardized patient, health professional, instructor or actor.
- One year of experience as a Standardized Patient/PETA/GUTA.
- Experience working with Zoom or similar teleconferencing platforms.
