Sustainability Program Manager

The Sustainability Leadership Council (SLC) is an initiative of Johns Hopkins University that was established in 2019 to build a university-wide intellectual community comprised of faculty, students, staff, and alumni addressing university sustainability. The mission of the SLC is to convene representatives from all university divisions, and provide a forum for discussion of environmental sustainability, planetary health, and climate and sustainability goals; recommend and promote policies, programs and other initiatives that will build a greater role for the Johns Hopkins Institutions in teaching, leadership, research and practice on environmental sustainability, both locally and globally; examine formal and informal structures and processes that inhibit Johns Hopkins Institutions from being more environmentally sustainable and recommend changes that foster greater environmental sustainability; and enhance transparency of JHU’s sustainability initiatives, resources, and performance to better inform the university community.


The SLC’s work is divided among four committees (Research, Academics, Operations, and Engagement) and is supported by a range of working groups on topics such as Environmental Justice, Campus as a Living Lab, Green Labs, Green Fleet, Interdisciplinary Academic Collaboration, and much more.


We are seeking a Sustainability Program Manager  who will work as a key member of the Office of Sustainability, and will report to the Director of Sustainability. This role is responsible for managing all aspects of the SLC working closely with the Director and SLC co-chairs, the VP for Facilities and Real Estate and lead faculty member. This position collaborates closely with all staff in the Office of Sustainability especially the Communications Specialist to achieve desired outcomes.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Program Management - 70%

  • Provide administrative leadership for the SLC; work closely the Sustainability Director, VP of Facilities, and Faculty Chair to envision and promote the long-term strategy and success of the SLC
  • Work closely with faculty and administrative chairs to manage SLC committees and working groups on a range of sustainability topics including sustainability research, curricular and co-curricular opportunities, operational sustainability, and sustainability awareness and behavior change
  • Works with committee leaders to develop program and/or project proposals including preparation of budgets with support from Financial Analyst
  • Leads planning efforts for management of SLC’s daily operations; set goals and objectives, develop strategic plans focusing on SLC engagement with all JHU schools and divisions, build consensus among members, and tracks performance and outcomes
  • Oversees planning and management of university-wide events and symposia focusing on annual sustainability themes with students, faculty, and staff across JHU and strategic external partners
  • Responsible for developing and managing work plans, timelines, multi-stakeholder partnership coordination and logistical needs of programs, projects, and events
  • Develops executive briefings for semi-annual meetings with university leaders in Provost and President’s Offices as well as key engagements with Deans of schools
  • Manages special projects with Office of Sustainability staff on a range of topics that support JHU’s 2030 Sustainability Plan
  • Oversees the development and implementation of a new Campus as Living Lab program for SLC with faculty and facilities leaders focusing on opportunities for university researchers and students to utilize JHU’s physical campus as testbeds for sustainability innovation
  • Supervises 1 full-time Sustainability Fellow responsible for supporting the Campus as a Living Lab program development and 1 – 2 additional student interns as needed; assists with recruiting and responsible for day-to-day oversight of tasks
  • Oversees SLC membership recruitment and participation to ensure university-wide representation and diversity of members  
  • Manages annual program budget and ensures all expenses are properly documented with assistance from Financial Analyst


Communications & Marketing - 15%

  • Oversee internal and external SLC communications and building and managing partnerships; works closely with Communications Specialist to develop appropriate content materials and reach targeted audiences
  • Writes content and communications to share progress of SLC initiatives to audiences including newsletters, articles, and other media with support from Communications Specialist
  • Writes formal annual reports summarizing SLC activities and progress; coordinates with internal and external vendors for design and layout


Administrative - 15%

  • Schedules meetings on behalf of SLC committees, working groups, co-leads, and council-wide meetings
  • Attends committee and working groups meetings, provides verbal updates, sends agendas, develops presentation material, and records meeting minutes


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's Degree, required, preferably in Sustainability, Environmental Science or Studies or related field
  • Five years in providing high level expertise
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula*
  • Experience in program management and coordination, complex multi-stakeholder relationships, and professional communications
  • Knowledge of sustainability spanning numerous subject areas (i.e. climate change mitigation and/or adaptation, built and natural environments, energy and emissions, waste reduction, transportation, food systems, environmental justice, etc.)


JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Sustainability, Environmental Science or Studies or related field


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated critical thinker and problem solver who is highly capable of self-directing
  • Experience with complex multi-stakeholder coordination with direct and indirect authority; experience with volunteer management
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in the use of MS Office Suite software including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint – and experience in analysis and presentation of information
  • Exceptional communication skills and ability to translate complex information in verbal and written forms
  • Outstanding project management and organizational skills, including the ability to lead a project team, prioritize tasks, and provide strategic guidance
  • Ability to manage a complex work portfolio and efficiently prioritize tasks to meet deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and with individuals at various levels across the university and externally
  • Strong creative acumen and strategic design thinking capabilities
  • Design experience and sensibilities are a plus to effectively convey information in visually compelling formats


Physical Requirements:

  • Lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs in relationship to setting up and preparing for events


Supervisory Responsibility:

  • 1 - 2 student interns, 1 full-time sustainability fellow


Budget Authority:

  • Direct management of 40K annual non-labor program budget
