Systems Administrator

General summary/purpose

Provides hardware and software maintenance and support for the smooth operation of a small high-performance computing cluster (HPCC), 0f 120-320 CPU to be used by analysts in the GeneSTAR Genetic Research Program for medium to large database analysis. The position will also include maintenance and support for a network storage system to maintain critical research data. 


Specific duties & responsibilities

  • Provide on-call operational support of high-performance computing cluster infrastructure. This includes initial building and configuring of the servers in preparation for application deployments, providing UNIX system administration support, production problem resolution, and planning and performing regular maintenance on hardware and operating system software. 
  • Apply knowledge of the operations to assist in or design automation processes to implement self-management services. This will require some knowledge of coding of automation in various technologies including UNIX shell scripting, OpenStack/Chef cookbooks/recipes, Ruby, Python scripting, Perl coding and RNA-Sequencing analysis. 
  • Diagnose and resolve problems to meet service level expectations established by the GeneSTAR analysts.


Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • One year related experience.
  • Additional training may substitute for experience.
  • Basic knowledge of Hardware Installation/Support for CPU and storage servers.


Preferred qualifications

  • At least 2 years of experience or equivalent course work in Scripting (Shell, Ruby, Python, or Perl).
  • Linux System administration skills, including the ability to understand, administer and provide tactical and strategic operational support of clustered environments and Linux server platforms.


Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Ability to provide support for server operating system, hardware or clustering problems remotely when not on site in urgent situations. Technical writing and verbal communications ability

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
