Technology Specialist


General summary/purpose:

Established in 1986, The Johns Hopkins University School of Education Center for Technology in Education (CTE) is a nationally recognized authority on educational technology. CTE’s mission is to promote equal access, transform instruction, and create leadership for change. CTE is a dynamic, entrepreneurial organization that develops new research-based products and methods for teaching educators to fully integrate technology into the learning environment for all students. CTE seeks a full-time Technology Specialist to assume a leadership role to develop, manage, and implement the training and support for the Ready for Kindergarten Online (KReady) system and related technologies.


The KReady system is a comprehensive online system that supports the administration of multiple early childhood assessments. It has a robust back-end database and interface for local school system data managers and district personnel to upload and manage their teacher, student, and enrollment data. It also has a teacher interface to input student scores and access a variety of teacher and parent-friendly reports. Related technologies include a teacher-facing app. and a student-friendly app. available on computer and tablets. 

This individual will be responsible for understanding every aspect of the technology as part of these projects and work to ensure smooth implementation across multiple states. Users at all levels of technology background/expertise will need training and support to access and effectively use the technology system. We are seeking a problem-solver that can provide ongoing implementation support for the states using these tools, as well as work with our instructional design and multimedia team members to design effective, creative, and high-quality training and support materials for these individuals. This individual should be able to effectively deliver this training in an clear and engaging manner to individuals, small groups, and large groups. 


Specific duties & responsibilities:

The primary responsibilities of the Technology Specialist will be to provide coordination and oversight on CTE’s Emerging Technologies team to guide the implementation and training for the KReady system technology.  
The project scope includes: 

  • Collaborate with the project manager and team members to identify and complete technology implementation activities (e.g., system accounts, local school system testing, troubleshooting)
  • Communicate with external partners (i.e., state lead staff) around technology implementation activities
  • Develop technology training materials, videos, and how-to’s around the EC-CAS system technologies for all levels of users including educators and school district data managers
  • Deliver training on the technology tools that are a part of the EC-CAS projects (in face-to-face, online, and blended formats as well as via synchronous webinars)
  • Identify current and future training needs
  • Manage ongoing implementation tasks including setting up user accounts, troubleshooting escalated support requests, and testing local school system connectivity prior to assessment administration
  • Conduct quality assurance testing for new technology features and functionality before deployment
  • May directly supervise new staff as EC-CAS work expands


Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in instructional design, instructional technology, education, or related field
  • Five years related experience
  • Additional education may substitute for experience, and additional experience may substitute required education to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula. 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years with experience in technology with increasing responsibility, training delivery, and following a project scope and timeline
  • Knowledge of effective training strategies for adult learning
  • Knowledge of current and emerging instructional technologies and data systems, and proven ability to adapt and learn new procedures and software programs
  • Experience with use of web-based technologies for online learning, collaboration with educational and information technology partners to design, develop, and test systems or tools

This person will be interacting with national and state leaders and have the ability to make independent decisions. This person will serve in a leadership role and will coordinate professional development activities for the various initiatives on this project.


Time spent on job duties:

  • Leadership and management of technology implementation (40%):
    • Includes coordinating and handling technology implementation activities, communicating with national experts/external partners, planning, monitoring technology-related training and support needs in the field, leadership in planning and organization of technology-related events with internal team and project, development of needed resources, evaluating the success of technology training and support initiatives
  • Technology testing and support duties (30%):
    • Includes system testing and troubleshooting to ensure ease of use of the system and related technologies
  • Technology training delivery (30%):
    • Delivery of face-to-face and online (including webinar) training around the KReady system and related technologies, support for users in the field, development of creative technology training and support resources including videos and how-to’s for users, technical writing

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities: 

  • Verbal and written communication, group facilitation and presentation skills required
  • Demonstrated ability to train one-on-one and in a group setting, as well as the ability to collaborate with national and state partners remotely as well as face-to-face
  • Must be able to lead implementation plan to meet project and learning goals
  • Must be self-directed with a teamwork orientation 
  • Must be able to problem-solve and find solutions to technical and training challenges 
  • Must be able to work independently in a fast-paced environment and meet project deadlines 
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with internal and external partners 
  • Knowledge of early childhood education is advantageous but not required

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
