Tutorial Assistant

Summer at Hopkins offers credit-bearing two-week Pre-College programs to academically advanced high school students from around the globe. The Summer at Hopkins Pre-College Program invites applications for Tutorial Assistants (TAs) for the following programs with corresponding modalities:


Pre-College Programs & Corresponding Modality


Homewood Campus or online.

  • Anatomy, Physiology & Disease.
  • Introduction to Surgery.
  • Medical School Intensive.


Homewood Campus Only

  • Exploring the Universe with Space Telescopes.
  • Foundational Mathematics of Artificial Intelligence.
  • Introduction to Experimental Design in Biology.
  • Introduction to Laboratory Research.
  • Social Inequality and the Public's Health.


Online Only

  • Applications of Chemistry in Medicine.
  • Creative Writing.
  • Data Analytics Workshop.
  • Epidemics, Pandemics, and Outbreaks.
  • Neurobiology: Cellular & Systems.
  • Neuroscience and Human Behavior.
  • Population Genomics: Evolution, Extinction & Disease.
  • Psychological Profiling.
  • Psychopathology and Its Development.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Attends and supports all classroom instruction, labs, course events, and activities.
  • Delivers lectures when needed.
  • Evaluates student performance, including assignments, papers, and exams.
  • Meets with the course instructor and assists in determining grading criteria.
  • Tracks and records individual and overall course grades in multiple formats.


Pre-College Program Session Dates


On-Campus

  • Session One: June 24, 2024 - July 4, 2024
  • Session Two: July 8, 2024 - July 18, 2024
  • Session Three: July 22, 2024 - August 1, 2024
  • In-Person Course Time: 9:30 AM-4:00 PM EDT.
  • Each teaching day includes a 1.5-to-2-hour break from 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm for lunch, office hours, prep time, meeting with students, etc. Classes are held on July 4.


Online

  • Session One: June 24, 2024 - July 8, 2024
  • Session Two: July 8, 2024 - July 19, 2024
  • Session Three: July 22, 2024 - August 2, 2024
  • Online Course Time -Programs are delivered asynchronously.
  • Instructors are expected to monitor student progress daily and respond to student questions or issues in a timely manner.
  • Faculty are required to offer a minimum of two synchronous office hours per week during the program at various times to be mindful of their students' time zones.


Additional Information

  • Multiple TA positions are available for most programs to meet student demand.
  • Course sections that reach an enrollment of 20 will be eligible for a TA.
  • TA positions are not eligible for benefits.
  • Candidates for these positions will be subject to a pre-employment background check and fingerprinted per policies related to working with minors.
  • All employees participating in Summer at Hopkins Pre-College programs must enroll and participate in mandatory online training relevant to working with minors and working at JHU.
  • Successful candidates teaching in-person courses will be required to complete the online lab safety training and attend the in-person UTL lab orientation.


Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Superb verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be student-oriented and driven.
  • Ability to learn and utilize various technologies (e.g., Teams, Zoom, Blackboard, the Students Information System, etc.) as needed.




Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma/GED and currently enrolled at a college/university pursing a degree in related subjects.
  • Three Years of related experience.
  • Additional graduate level education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's or Master's Degree from an accredited college/university in a related field preferred. 
  • At least one year of related experience working with college students preferred, such as Biology teaching/tutoring experience.

If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing.
