The Bloomberg Center for Government Excellence at Johns Hopkins University (GovEx or the Center) seeks to hire a UX/UI and Data Visualization Designer to join our team of government, data, and performance practice experts to support senior government leaders across the United States, Canada, and Latin America to use data to get better results for residents.


The UX/UI and Data Visualization Designer plays a critical role in our organization on our team, translating complex datasets into visual stories. You will support the team of researchers and analysts to find the relevant data stories that we want to translate and lead the design of the data visualizations to communicate insights. You will support the portfolio of data projects carried out by GovEx’s Office of Research & Analytics in collaboration with our Data Visualization Solutions Specialist / D3 Developer, data engineers, data scientists, analysts, researchers, program managers, and other external collaborators and partners.


The Data Visualization Designer must be someone with experience designing data stories and visualizations, intellectually curious, and with commitment to unlocking the value of data for the public good.


The Office of Research and Analytics works to unite data with subject matter expertise on social topics that are relevant to cities and their residents. We make both data and its context readily available to be used and consumed by city employees, developers, and the public. We also provide coaching and technical assistance to cities aiming to improve their data practices.


Since 2015, GovEx has supported over 10,000 public sector leaders in 37 countries, and over 568 cities, counties, and states by providing coaching and technical assistance; research and analytics; training and capacity building; and human resource support. GovEx is a recognized leader in the provision of public sector training to upskill employees and improve data practices through self-guided courses and instructor-facilitated learning.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities


Data visualization design (60%)

  • Design data visualizations and data-driven stories.
  • Coach and facilitate conversations among teams of researchers, analysts, and non-technical partners to surface the relevant data stories in their data that they want to communicate.
  • Support our Data Visualization Solutions Specialist / D3 Developer through the implementation of the data visualization designs.
  • Support the team to gather feedback from clients and partners to continually improve the products and tools we create.


Other graphic design tasks (30%)

  • Design from individual data visualizations to complex web stories, dashboards, and websites.
  • Create infographics.
  • Develop mobile and web UX/UI.
  • Support the design, layout, and illustration of communication materials for print and digital platforms, including reports and presentations.


Other tasks (10%)

  • Serve as the de facto art director for data visualizations.
  • Collaborate with developers, analysts, data scientists, researchers, policy experts, and other partners.
  • Communicate with GovEx's leadership, and others on the team.
  • Collaborate with external partners, contractors, and vendors.


Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • High-level of proficiency using design software like Figma or Adobe Creative Cloud applications (XD or Illustrator).
  • Familiarity with data analysis and statistical methods.
  • Familiarity with public sector data and policies.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts, Graphic Design, or related field.
  • Four years' experience and a portfolio.


Preferred Qualifications
  • At least five years’ experience designing data visualizations.
  • Experience coaching a team of researchers, analysts, and non-technical partners through the design process to surface data stories.

Total Rewards
The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing.
