Vehicle Driver - RAR

We are seeking a Vehicle Driver - RAR who will drive a cargo van or box truck to transport animals and animal facility related supplies between JHU facilities. Assists loading dock supervisor with incoming orders, animal shipments, and loading dock cleaning.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • The driver operates a cargo van, pickup truck, or light truck within the Baltimore metropolitan area, including the JHU research farm located in Freeland, Maryland.
  • The driver will transport research animals and supplies to Johns Hopkins University buildings, campuses, and the research farm.
  • The driver may occasionally deliver to or pick up from a non-JHU facility, i.e., Baltimore Washington International Airport, the Food and Drug Administration, and any other research facilities.
  • Makes trips to local vendors to pick up supplies.
  • The driver follows established schedules and obeys all traffic laws and regulations; ensures the safety of the research animals transported; ensures consolidation of loads based on species to meet the regulatory requirements of the USDA and Animal Welfare Act.
  • Performs routine vehicle sanitation following the standards in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and the Animal Welfare Act.
  • Maintains the vehicle properly by periodically checking gas, oil, fluids, tires, etc. Notifies the supervisor and coordination of needed repairs or malfunctions.
  • Reports all damages to the vehicle and obtains appropriate information in accidents.
  • Observe safety precautions and safe driving practices to avoid hurting oneself and others and damaging property.
  • Loads and unloads the van/truck at pickup and drop-off points, ensuring animals are delivered to their final delivery point.


Loading Dock Duties

  • Fill supply orders for animal facilities based on supervisor order sheets.
  • Break down animal crates as needed.
  • Sweep /mop dock floors and empty trash cans.
  • Pick up the mouse traps when instructed.
  • Assist in processing animal shipments as needed.
  • Assist in the collection of information and filling out paperwork.
  • Empty bedding system dust collector(s) weekly.
  • Stocking away incoming supply orders from vendors after arrival on the loading dock.
  • Other related duties assigned.



Minimum Qualifications
  • High school Degree or equivalent.
  • One-year related work experience.
  • Valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
  • Ability to drive a cargo van and light truck in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Ability to interpret (read/write) complete records and schedules and to street signs, etc.
  • Ability to interact and work with other University staff.
  • Ability to work independently and establish priorities.
  • Ability to make decisions about last-minute changes to the delivery schedule.
  • Knowledge of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and the Animal Welfare Act.
  • Ability to pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical every 2 years.


**This is a Bargaining Unit position. All newly hired employees in Bargaining Unit positions shall be considered “probationary” employees until completion of 90 calendar days of employment. These employees shall become members of the Bargaining Unit if this employment continues beyond four months. The university will notify the employees’ union. Bargaining Unit employees shall become eligible for benefits upon completion of their probationary period.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
