Veterinary Technician
Research Animal Resources at Johns Hopkins University's seeking a Veterinary Technician who will provide support in the animal husbandry clinical management of animal research. The veterinary technician will work with rodents and will be responsible for performing clinical rounds at multiple facilities, performing monitoring of ongoing cases, performing clinical treatments, and communicating with investigators regarding clinical cases and colony management. The veterinary technician may also be required to work in areas under quarantine for management of infectious diseases of rodents and will be required to use appropriate biosecurity practices when necessary. Candidates for this position must not have allergies to rodents like mice and rats.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform routine animal husbandry procedures.
- Consult with veterinarians on clinical case management and treatment of animals.
- Complete the collection, maintenance and compliance of written documentation and records.
- Manage and record animal clinical cases independently
- Assist veterinary, research, and Animal Resources staff as needed. This includes provisions of medical care/treatments, anesthesia, or research manipulations.
- Review and communicate clinical care plan(s) with investigators
- Perform animal experimental techniques, including restraint, IM, IV, IP and SQ injections, blood and tissue collection, necropsy, anesthesia and analgesia and surgery techniques.
- Assist with receiving and shipping laboratory animals.
- May perform behavioral studies, and animal breeding colony management.
- May perform diagnostic lab techniques including in-house parasitology and basic microscopy.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or graduation equivalent.
- One year of related experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Specific Physical Requirements for the job
- Ability to work under environmental conditions that could require the use of safety equipment.
- Specialty Occupational Health requirements up to date and complete.
