Website Designer

The Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs (CCP) is seeking a Digital Manager to join its Digital Team to work on a new online learning initiative of the CCP-led Breakthrough ACTION. The position requires a mix of digital content development, technical skills as well as the ability to manage and execute web-based projects.


The Digital Manager is responsible for bringing a full spectrum of creative website and digital efforts to CCP. This position will report to the Director of Digital Strategy and work directly with Breakthrough ACTION team leads to develop and execute strategies that support project goals to engage and inspire key audiences. Additionally, the Digital Manager will be the point of contact for the online learning initiative and other efforts as assigned. The ideal candidate is highly creative, collaborative and has demonstrated experience in website design, management, troubleshooting and user management, preferably in a non-profit or academic setting.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manages online learning website, which includes content, layout and design.
  • Troubleshooting technical problems and working with team leads, staff and/or vendors to articulate solutions.
  • Contribute ideas and provide recommendations to optimize the configuration of the learning management system to meet identified program needs.
  • Develops, manages, and analyzes digital usage reports for project teams and provides recommendations to improve performance.
  • Maintains content, layout and design for project websites and customized landing pages.
  • Establishes and monitors benchmarks for measuring the impact of project efforts.
  • Work across teams (research, program, communications) to support digital efforts.
  • Researches and identifies relevant innovative technologies, tools, and digital marketing strategies to improve CCP’s digital efforts.
  • Adds, edits and formats content in WordPress.
  • Create/edit graphics in Photoshop.
  • Suggests improvements in user experience.
  • Monitor performance and results on various websites, identifying and evaluating improvement options, introducing new technology, maintaining links, performing updates, etc.
  • Handle and prioritize multiple projects while meeting design objectives and timelines.
  • Make recommendations to improve user experience on sites managed by CCP.
  • Create overall concepts for user experience, ensuring all interactions are intuitive and easy.
  • Make improvements in websites layout, flow, and detail-level style.
  • Maintain accessibility standards, produce wireframes/prototypes and set interactivity standards.
  • Provides additional digital communications support as requested.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in fine arts, graphic design or other related field.
  • Four years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Proficiency in working in development and live environments in WordPress, performing routine maintenance and security updates, and troubleshooting errors.
  • Project management skills, strong writing, analytical, and critical thinking skills, ability to work independently, a growth mindset for what is next and a willingness to proactively gain new skills.
  • Experience in visual design or user experience is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of web and mobile design principles.
  • Basic coding language skills (HTML, CSS), knowledge of open-source frameworks used at CCP (WordPress) are preferred. Basic knowledge of JavaScript and PHP, experience working with learning management systems and online user management. The ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders is also a plus.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience implementing digital/web projects, developing digital tools independently, knowledge of the development lifecycle, experience in adapting materials online, basic graphic design skills.

Starting Salary Range: $52,230 - $71,890 (Commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
