The Department of Psychiatry, Sibley Memorial Hospital Location, at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine is seeking a Nurse Practitioner to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health team to optimize team performance and patient outcomes. We are seeking an excellent clinician to provide clinical care to adults at the Johns Hopkins Sibley Memorial Hospital Campus.

The Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing high quality and effective patient care through the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of acute and chronic mental illness. In addition to providing direct patient care, the Nurse Practitioner also educates patients and family members regarding mental illness. The Nurse Practitioner shares responsibility for the provision of excellent health care in compliance with state and federal accreditation requirements, and practices within the guidelines of the Department of Psychiatry, Johns Hopkins Medicine and in accordance with the District of Columbia Board of Nursing. The Nurse Practitioner is granted privileges by the Sibley Memorial Hospital Medical Board; these privileges list specific tasks and are reviewed annually.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities: 

Rounding and medication management of adult patients on the inpatient unit.  Complete progress note in EPIC and bill for services provided.

 

Responds in timely manner to request for psychiatric consultation for adults who are patients on med/surg units.

 

Required to participate in on-call after hours rotation shared by Psychiatry providers, reachable by phone and/or pager, which includes one weeknight of call per week.  Required to participate in weekend call (6 weekends per year), which includes coming into the hospital to round on all inpatients, completing consults requested by med/surg units, and taking calls for admissions and discharges from the social workers in the ED.  Required to participate in Department of Psychiatry provider and staff meetings.
 

 

 

Works collaboratively with the Consult Service Psychiatrist to assist with consults on the inpatient units as needed.

 

Performs psychiatric assessment, formulates diagnosis, and in consultation with referring physician recommends and completes appropriate disposition.

 

 

Provides requesting physician with results of assessment and disposition plan.

 

 

Interview patient and performs psychosocial assessment, mental status examination and past psychiatric history

 

 

Contacts family or any collateral informants necessary to provide information necessary to complete an assessment

 

Formulates an appropriate treatment/disposition plan for patient.

 

Coordinate care for patients to achieve clinical and organizational outcomes. Uses advanced clinical and theoretical knowledge to identify acute and/or chronic health problems through a comprehensive, age appropriate assessment of patients using skills in taking medical histories, screening, physical examinations, ordering diagnostic tests, making tentative diagnoses, prescribing appropriate medications and treatments. Provides evidence-based care and provides patient education for self-care chronic disease management.


Effectively uses resources. Prioritizes and organizes work to meet the changing priorities of Sibley Memorial Hospital.  Provides guidance and direction to other staff where applicable to promote quality improvement/patient safety projects.

Works collaboratively with medical and surgical consultants. Strive to meet and/or exceed established productivity targets for services provided.

Complete notes within the EPIC electronic medical record system on the day of visit and discharge summaries on the day of discharge for effective communication with primary care providers, medical consultants and informal care providers.

Accountable for own patient care decisions. On a regular and continuous basis, exercises administrative judgment and assumes responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results having an impact on people, costs, and/or quality of service within the functional area.

Responsible for other clinical duties as assigned.
 

Qualifications:

Master's degree in nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. Must be licensed as NP in the District of Columbia and State of Maryland. Demonstrated competence in the delivery of health care to a diverse group of child and adolescent patients preferred. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the Sibley Memorial Hospital credentialing process is required prior to start date. 

 

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

Knowledge: Advanced clinical skills in specialty area or equivalent. Successfully completes all training courses required for access to Epic and other clinical software systems. General computer knowledge and capability to use computer. Requires effective use of resources and cost awareness.

Skills and Abilities: Ability to incorporate into practice theoretical concepts and advanced clinical skills with patients, families, and interdisciplinary health care team members. Ability to analyze data to synthesize and summarize information and to make judgments regarding patient care. Analytical ability necessary to diagnose patients and to develop and implement plans of action for long and short term management of acute and chronic health. Ability to apply principles of evidence-based practice, scientific process, and service excellence in practice. 

Ability to interact successfully with the public. Ability to perform effectively despite sudden deadlines and changing priorities. Ability to maintain personal composure in high stress situations, deadlines and changing priorities. Demonstrated interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills are required to service a diverse customer base. Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with all members of the interdisciplinary health care team to enhance collaboration and problem-solving. 

Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, in order to provide information to patients and health care personnel. Ability to demonstrate and convey a favorable image of the organization and to conform to proper standards of professional dress, attitude and demeanor. Ability to demonstrate a high level of interpersonal skills required to interact with patients, patients’ families/visitors and clinical staff.

Proven ability to relate effectively to individuals of various backgrounds and cultures, including the understanding and appreciation of diverse cultural, ethnic, gender and international differences .Ability to perform with a high degree of accuracy and with meticulous attention to detail. Demonstrate a strong ability to use initiative and judgment and to identify, analyze and solve problems. Ability to demonstrate self-direction and initiation. Ability to work independently and as a part of a team. Ability to function effectively in a fluid, dynamic, and rapidly changing environment.

Able to operate patient care equipment to assess health; proficiency in using desktop computers or laptops, and general office equipment on a daily basis.

Physical Requirements: Work requires standing, bending, sitting and using/manipulating various health assessment instruments and machines, and/or walking for extended periods of time. Work may require positioning and assisting patients and transporting patients and/or equipment from one location to another with little likelihood for injury if proper body mechanics and procedures are followed.

Working Conditions: Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous material, pharmacological agents, with little likelihood of harm if established health precautions are followed.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
