LAN Administrator II

 

This position provides information technology support to the Energetics Research Group and the AERo Fuels Lab; both are entities within The Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering.  The primary duties and responsibilities of the job are:

 

User and Desktop Support:  35%

  • Under limited direction, provide system installation and administration for Desktop, Laptop/Tablet, and Smart Phone devices; train and educate end-users on the functionality of common software products; provide extended support for staff as it pertains to in-house developed software.
  • Independently troubleshoot and resolve desktop PC/Macintosh/Linux issues, server issues, as related to LAN. Perform critical thinking to evaluate and resolve technical or procedural problems. Regularly contact vendors to resolve hardware, application and operating system issues.
  • Evaluate, recommend, and select products/services for maintaining and improving computer systems and network infrastructure.  Collect/review vendor bids, submit purchase requests to in-house SAP Purchasing Admin.
  • Initiate meetings to resolve technical issues.

 

Server and Network Support:  30%

  • Under limited direction, perform the development of server hardware configuration, meet with customer base; set up and manage system monitoring tools; set up automatic software distribution packages; tests, investigates, recommends, and implements tools to support the server environment. Installs, maintains, and troubleshoots all LAN devices and related software for branch offices, mobile branch offices, as well as internal and external networks.
  • Employs operating system utilities; makes optimum use of the OS; Integrates anti-spyware and anti-virus tools.
  • Write procedures for backup and disaster recovery.  Write functional and user procedure guides and suggests changes.  Manage/maintain weekly, monthly, and annual tape backup sets.
  • Updates and creates new, well organized, server documents that adhere to document standards. Reviews and corrects documentation; changes/maintains documentation.  Maintain hardware, software, licensing inventory documentation.
  • Gather data and conducts analysis per established application or unit test plans using file or DB access language.  Utilize server logs to define root cause of security and maintenance issues.  Compare benchmarks against data collected.  Define file indexes, space requirements, backup and recovery. 
  • Present issues to management in a timely manner describing technical items in non-technical language.
  • Using OS specific file editor, write scripts to support environment.  Support application development team through the lifecycle of a project.

 

Project Management Role:  15%

  • Assigned role of Project Leader as needed.
  • Develop task estimates including costs and requirements.
  • Works with customers and technical staff to define requirements, creates forms, reports, and screens.
  • Develop test plans and report on test results.  Maintain contact with outside organizations in the maintenance and/or purchase of the LAN.  Train technical and/or user staff in work process and competencies.  Track status of projects status and reports to Manager.  Recommend changes to procedures or technical implementations as needed.

 

Classified Computer Support:  20%

  • Configure and support classified computers. 
  • Act as the Information System Security Officer (ISSO), report to the Information System Security Manager (ISSM).
  • Assist the ISSM to write System Security Plans (SSP) and perform weekly and monthly maintenance as per NISPOM Chapter 8. 

Position will require candidate to work off hours as needed in support of changes to the environment.

 

Minimum Qualifications (Requirements):

  • Two years college course work. 
  • Three years related experience. 
  • Additional experience can be substituted for education and additional education can be substituted for experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Four years college course work required. 
  • Five to seven years prior related experience. 
  • BS in Computer Science or Information Systems or equivalent work experience preferred. 
  • BS or higher in Computer Science (or related field)

 

Special Skills and Knowledge:

  • Most possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Familiar with DoD and University computer policies and procedures.
  • Must possess strong communication skills; both written and verbal.  Must have proven technical skills and demonstrated troubleshooting skills. 
  • Must present an excellent customer service attitude. 
  • Willingness to meet customer expectations in the area of problem diagnostics, resolution and interpretation of customer needs in a high stress, fast-paced environment.
  •  Demonstrated ability to think and act independently.
  • Microsoft Windows desktop and server OS, HPC, Exchange, and SQL servers, Mac OS, Linux, MySQL and Apache server experience are desirable. Cisco Firewall and Router experience.  Industry certifications from Cisco, Microsoft and other vendors are desirable.  Experience with any of the following is preferred: programming languages (PHP, VB, Java, etc.), programming tools (MS Visual Studio), system analysis and design; familiarity with project management.
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Permanent employment is contingent upon obtaining a U.S. Government personal security clearance consistent with WSE-ERG contractual and industrial security requirements.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
