Laboratory Technician

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Execute corrective maintenance and repair services on laboratory devices and systems. This includes disassembling, replacing and/or repairing defective parts, rewiring, reassembling where required, troubleshooting, calibrating and making sure the device is ready for use by using standard and specialized tools as well as test equipment and technical manuals.
  • Perform scheduled inspections and preventative maintenance of laboratory devices and systems.
  • Maintain inventory of hazardous materials (volumes of gases and liquids). Coordinate hazardous waste collection.
  • Coordinate shipping and receiving of laboratory samples.
  • Periodic inspection of safety apparatus (eyewash, showers) and maintain log.
  • Assist lab researchers in routine installation of test articles or other routine tasks as necessary following established and documented procedures.



Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

High school diploma / GED with some science coursework.


Preferred Qualifications:

Certificate from technical institute or internship experience preferred.


U.S. Citizenship is required. Permanent employment is contingent upon obtaining a U.S. Government personal security clearance within six months, consistent with ERG contractual and industrial security requirements.



  • Candidate must have mechanical skill to work with hand tools such as wrenches, tube benders, screwdrivers, and digital multimeters.
  • Candidate must be able to operate power tools such as drills and saws
  • Candidates with a strong background in DIY and "maker" type activities are encouraged to apply.
  • Ability to follow procedures and safety protocols to ensure a high quality and safe laboratory environment. The laboratory includes flammable and combustible liquids, pressurized flammable gases, cryogenic nitrogen and flammable cryogenic fuels, strong oxidizers, and the use of high electrical current and high pressures to simulate rocket environments. Attention to safety is of the utmost importance.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
