General Summary/Purpose:

The Center for Technology in Education in the School of Education at Johns Hopkins University seeks a dynamic individual to fill the role of Visual Designer. This casual position requires a detail-oriented person with high technical abilities, good communications skills, and knowledge and experience with executing design plans. This individual will have the unique opportunity to create cutting-edge visual concepts, artwork, and layouts utilizing digital computer software to communicate ideas that engage, inspire, inform, and captivate users (internal and external). Reporting to the Senior Program Director for Learning, Engagement, and Design, this position will develop the overall layout and production design for various applications such as graphics, websites, marketing materials, presentations and internal / external events.


NOTE: This position is not benefits eligible.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

I.  Graphic Design

• Conceptualize engaging and illustrative info-graphics for training sites, presentations, brochures and reports

• Design various website elements, including: attractive banners, splash images, prominent buttons, menus, and icons

• Source images (stock photos and video footage)


II.  Marketing Materials

• Design various marketing materials for center projects and programs, including: flyers, brochures, promotional items, booklets, conference handouts, signage, and posters

• Create email marketing items, presentation materials and interactive event materials

• Create vibrant, informative and engaging presentations for various audiences


III.  Collaboration

• Review materials created by others for standards and brand alignment

• Collaborate with the Learning, Engagement, and Design team on design needs


IV.  Other

• Visualize and design event layouts for a welcoming and engaging user experience for events

• Resize assets for different devices — tablet, mobile and web

• Work with a component library

• Juggle multiple projects simultaneously while effectively managing timelines and expectations


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design, Fine Arts Education or related field
  • At least two years’ experience and a portfolio required


Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Understanding of web design issues, including browser usability and cross-platform compatibility
  • Responsive design
  • Strong design and troubleshooting skills, as well as an eye for detail
  • A solid foundation in typography, layout and design
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Experience with transitions and dynamic interaction
  • Excellent visual, written and verbal communication skills, along with presentation and negotiation skills
  • A penchant for details and organization, including the ability to prioritize tasks, communicate progress and meet deadlines
  • The ability to effectively take direction and work both collaboratively and autonomously

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
