The Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation at Johns Hopkins University (the Center) seeks a i-team Communications & Community Engagement Associate, Dayton OH to join a new Innovation Team (“i-team”).
Innovation Teams unlock creativity from within city governments and the communities they serve. These teams take partners and stakeholders through an evidence-based process to tackle the big problems in their cities no one has yet been able to solve, generate more ambitious responses, and test and adapt interventions until they produce impact. They also work closely with the Mayor, the City's leadership team, and City departments to change the culture of city government.
Dayton is one of 25 U.S. cities joining Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities. Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities is an initiative to incubate and implement transformative local solutions to build low-carbon, resilient, and economically thriving communities. Building on the longtime leadership of U.S. cities to confront the overlapping crises of climate change and racial wealth inequity, the new initiative will provide deep support to selected cities to pursue transformative solutions.
The Communications & Community Engagement Associate is charged with leading the Dayton i-team’s outreach work on Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities. The Communications & Community Engagement Coordinator works closely with their i-team colleagues as well as departmental staff, external experts, community organizations, and residents to ensure the i-team is delivering impactful solutions. The Communications & Community Engagement Coordinator is an employee of Johns Hopkins University and based in Dayon City Hall. They report to the i-team Director.
The first of its kind in the world, the Center is advancing the field of public sector innovation by marrying cutting-edge practice with world-class research to transform the culture of government, deliver exceptional results for residents, and inspire trust in public service. The Center is committed to working with communities focused on ending legacies of structural, entrenched racism and oppression. The Communications & Community Engagement Associate must be willing to think about reimagined government, knowledge, and engagement models through the lens of dismantling these legacies.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Develop and implement strategies to engage diverse community groups.
- Lead community outreach and manage ongoing engagement with stakeholders and residents.
- Organize and facilitate community meetings, forums, and events to gather input and feedback and to co-create solutions.
- Plan, organize, and produce community sessions, such as meetings and workshops, including recruiting participants and volunteers when necessary.
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with community leaders, organizations, and residents.
- Collaborate with external organizations, such as nonprofits and businesses, to support community-driven projects and initiatives.
- Develop the i-team’s strategy, plan, and corresponding activities for communications, marketing, and promotion.
- Manage planning and coordination of communications projects, programs, and operations.
- Source, develop, and distribute compelling stories around impact, best practices, and innovative solutions, with a particular focus on the i-team’s progress and achievements using original and creative approaches.
- Produce content for the i-team’s public-facing forums (social media, website, newsletter, etc.), adhering to BASC program and partnership guidelines.
Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Experience in community outreach, public relations, or a similar role.
- Experience working with community organizations or local government.
- Ability to collaborate with program leaders in designing programs to meet the needs of diverse stakeholders.
- Excellent communication (written and oral) skills.
- Strong organizational and planning abilities.
- The capacity to thrive in relationships with clients and leaders in the civic sector.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in related field.
- Four years related experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working for or in collaboration with local government.
- Experience working on issues related to sustainability, climate equity, racial equity, and economic inclusion, a plus
- Experience leveraging and mobilizing public, private, and philanthropic resources for projects, a plus.
