Research Program Assistant II

Center Brief

The Johns Hopkins Center for American Indian Health (CAIH) has a mission to work in partnership with tribal communities to raise the health status and self-sufficiency of American Indian people to the highest possible level. This mission is accomplished through three core activities: 1) research, 2) service, and 3) training. The goals of the Center projects are to develop, implement, and evaluate projects aimed at improving health status for Native American families and communities. 

 

General Summary/Purpose

The goals of the behavioral and mental health prevention projects are to co-design and/or implement culturally relevant interventions and evaluate the impact on improving health and sometimes educational outcomes for Native American children, families and communities. The Research Program Assistant will work for the Johns Hopkins Center for American Indian Health as part of a type 2 diabetes intervention project team. The goal of this diabetes intervention project is to implement and evaluate the impact of a type 2 diabetes management and prevention program for adult caregivers and their 10-16 year old children. 

This position works together with the Center’s Duluth, MN and Baltimore, MD-based research teams to assist in the delivery of field-based public health services.  Project activities include family-based outreach and education, travel to local homes by car, delivering educational curriculum in participants homes, providing transportation to/from clinic appointments for participants as needed, organizing occasional community events, and document completion.

 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Complete training and demonstrate proficiency in the curriculum and its delivery.
  • Travel to, and conduct, home-based type 2 diabetes management education lessons for adults and youth.
  • Update program logs and assist with data entry as needed.
  • Recruit eligible youth and families to participate voluntarily in this project.
  • Provide transportation to/from clinic visits for participants as needed.
  • Attend clinic visits with participants as appropriate.
  • Attend trainings and meetings.
  • Attend community events to represent the project and maintain contacts with community partners.
  • Collect data, review documents for accuracy, and process participant data as needed.
  • Refer participants to other community resources as needed.
  • Store protected health information in a secure location, and keepparticipant information confidential.
  • Work closely with the Program Coordinator to ensure the curriculum is delivered with fidelity and quality.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory)

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two years of related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula***.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree.
  • Familiarity with Ojibwemowin and/or Ojibwe culture.
  • Experience working within Native American populations.

  • Knowledge of Native American culture and familiarity with the community in which the worksite is located.

  • Ability to take direction and respond positively to feedback in the workplace.
  • Knowledge of community geography and ability to travel rural roads safely.
  • Good oral and written communication.
  • Ability to work well with others.

 

Other:

  • Able to travel to and attend required, multi-day and/or week-long trainings in MN or WI. (Program-eligible mileage reimbursement and training payments will be included).
  • Current driver’s license and access to a reliable and insured vehicle.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including mornings, weekends, and evenings as needed.
  • Ability to spend time in health facilities and interact with nurses, doctors, etc.
  • Potential for advancement to full time during peak intervention delivery.

 

***JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
