Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Pediatrics seeks a Nurse Practitioner.   In collaboration with the neonatologist, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) will provide direct patient care, consultation and education.  The direct patient care to be  provided to the patients in the NICU at Frederick Memorial Hospital and will include performing history and physical examinations, development of plan, implementation (writing orders, performing procedures), evaluation and assessment, and documentation.


Will perform routine high-risk neonatal procedures, which include, but not limited to endotracheal intubation, thoracentesis, chest tube placement, umbilical vein and umbilical artery catheterizations, lumbar punctures, venipuncture, arterial puncture, peripheral arterial line placement, percutaneous central venous catheter placement, suprapubic urine aspiration.  Attend high-risk deliveries and perform neonatal resuscitation as per NRP guidelines, which include routine stabilization, use of bag/mask/Neo-T/ETT positive pressure ventilation, endotracheal intubation, umbilical vein catheterization, and administration and ordering of resuscitation medications and IV fluids. Assist with the development of and communication of care plan for patients, with parents, providers and referring physicians.


The Nurse Practitioner will provide education and support to the families of the NICU patients.   Participate in QA/PI activities of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.  Assist in the development of training/education for nursing staff in the Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery.  Collaborate with interdisciplinary team on plans of care.  .  Consult with community physicians in the care of infants in the Newborn Nursery and provide prenatal consultation at the request of the obstetric care provider.  




Master's degree in nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner.  Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing.  This individual must be a certified neonatal nurse practitioner with CPR and NRP certification. A minimum of 1 years of related experience preferred, and a minimum of five years NICU nursing experience is preferred.   Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.  Completion of the JHH and Frederick Memorial Hospital credentialing process is required prior to start date.    



 Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   Ventilator management including high frequency ventilation, parental nutrition administration, neonatal resuscitation and care of sick infants.



Physical Requirements:   Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.  Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s).  Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.
